Lalibela Hotel
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • I arrived here mostly by chance. When I was arriving to town by bus, I commented to my bus mate if he knew some hotel here and he told me he lived in fron of 2, the Alif Paradise and the Lalibela Hotel. As the first was the only one I had in my LP guide, he took me to this one first, but it was fool. So we tried in the new Lalibela Hotel and it was a good choice.
It is a local hotel with rooms around a central patio with a tiny garden. Hot (sometimes) and cold shower, WC ensuite, all double rooms (I used it as a single). It also has a basic restaurant and seats outside at the patio.
Very friendly stuff, they kept my rucksack the last day when I was leaving.

35B (3,5 USD) the room, probably cheaper if you bargain.

    Seven Olives
  • Tip Rating:
  • This government-run hotel is one of the best here, but don't expect luxury wester standard. Rooms are clean and big but pretty basic. The gardens are nice and there is a pleasant terrace with views, good for sunsets.
I visited it while looking for a room, but finally chose a cheaper one, as the difference in quality was not big, but the price was about 12 USD, much more than the 3,5 USD of Lalibela Hotel.
This hotel is a good place to ask for a taxi to the airport too, as many travellers come here to share it.

Lal Hotel: Hotel with a great view
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The Lal Hotel has lovely rooms, bungalow-style, with shower and toilet in a pleasant compound. If you have the chance, choose a room at the edge, from where you will have a breathtaking view at the surrounding mountains. There are some seats and tables in the shade.

You can also camp in the garden around the restaurant in the middle of the conpound. In the restaurant they have good meals. We found out, that there was another bar behind the reception. It has low local prices and a menu in amharic. We drunk here some coffee and had some nice cakes. For meals they send us back to the restaurant of the hotel.

    Alief Paradise
  • Tip Rating:
  • I didn't stay there as it was full, but took a look around and seemed a pretty clean and nice place, though basic. Rooms around a central courtyard.
The boss, Solomon, organizes daytrips to see the outwards churches. I was about to go in one of these but the other 2 failed, and it became too expensive for me to go alone.
Rooms for about 40B I think.

It's got a restaurant / nightclub, but the food was rather basic and the atmosphere was more of a club than of a restaurant.

SEVEN OLIVES HOTEL: TOP OF THE HILL
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:

  • The Seven Olives is THE hotel at the top. Lalibela is one big steep hill starting its decline right at the gates of this nice hotel. They are well situated to both the main entrance to the churches, the Ethiopian Airlines office and shops. Rooms are clean and comfortable and the staff are friendly. The best part is the restaurant with its huge panoramic terrace. It is a great place to eat and drink beer and watch the sun set at night. The hotel is set in a well maintained garden. It also has secure car parking.

The hotel has a small gift shop, internet and can arrange anything from a rental car to tours of the area.

    THE LAL HOTEL: THEIVING BASTARDS
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:

  • PLEASE DO NOT STAY HERE! THEY RIPPED ME OFF. I arrived at the Lalibela Airport and there were desks for every single hotel in the baggage claim hall. I was staying at the Seven Olives Hotel ad there was only one person in the baggage hall. He told me that he was the transport for the Seven Olives, which provides free transfers to the airport. Great! Off we went down the road and I was dropped off at the Seven Olives. Then asked for 10 Birr more than it would have been for a taxi. An argument ensued in the lobby of the Seven Olives and I had to pay. This is what the LAL HOTEL does. They lie in wait at the airport and scam money from other Hotel guests.

The Seven Olives told me that if I had just asked the airport staff to telephone them they would have picked me up – for free!

    JERUSALEM GUEST HOUSE
  • Tip Rating:

  • The Jerusalem Guest house is known for having good views over the mountains and being a nice place to stay. It has en-suite rooms with hot water for $20/$30 for a single/double. It has good reviews. It is however, at the bottom of the steep hill, but most hotels here are.

    HELEN HOTEL
  • Tip Rating:

  • This looked like a pleasant budget option ¾ of the way down the hill. It is almost opposite the Tourist Information office.

    Kedemt Hotel: Nice Place
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The Kedemt Hotel is a friendly locally run place. It very basic but you will find a clean room and the owner may give you discount if the business is low. As a Faranji you pay the same price than a Habesha!

Rooms go for 10 to 15 Birr depending on your bargaining skills. The shower (only cold water) and toilet is in the garden and very simple.
The place is located only a few hundred metres from the bus stop next to the telecommunication office.

The owner also runs one of the cafes near the bus stop and can arrange breakfast very early in the morning if you want to catch the first bus in the morning.
