This place must be the strangest hotel in China. Think Brigadoon. Twilight Zone. Do not (under any circumstances) expect anyone to understand your English or to be accustomed to speaking slowly for a foreigner trying to understand their Chinese. This is not to say they are not nice. The service personnel are very friendly and want to serve, but they clearly have never dealt with any foreigners. I would highly recommend anyone going there to have an interpreter or a good command of the language. That being said, the location of the hotel is ideal for exploring the Longmen grottoes, the main parts being just across the river and some parts lying just below the hotel. Visitors to the hotel should know that the advertised "western restaurant" and bars are actually non-existent, or possibly may be closed without warning. We were told they were full, "no, closed," after having seen several cars full of VIPs pull up at the red-carpeted entrance to the hotel. The entire place seems to be somehow not really a hotel, but a location for something else entirely (a Communist party meeting comes to mind.) The rooms are lovely, though the beds are characteristically for China, very hard. The 4th floor bar has a breathtaking view of the grottoes at night, though you should not expect to get a cold drink or anything with ice. Buy a bottle of wine and enjoy the view. And remember it is all about the adventure.

The art in the halls is incredibly. Actual historic relics are displayed in beautifully lit nooks along each floor with motion detectors illuminating each as you walk towards them.
