Logette Sanbois

This is a wooden style accomodation build on a small hill about 15 mins walk from the train station. It is surrounded by forest, and a stream and the rooms are very comfortable.

I love their big public bath, which you can use privately. It has a big window looking out into the forest behind and gives you a very peaceful feeling as you soak.

The meals they serve are also very delicious.

Rates are reasonable. Per person is 5500yen (US$50). Gets cheaper with more people.

BIG BONUS: Their Beagle called Charlie, after Charlie Brown. ^__^

The Ogihara family are very nice and friendly. We went during a non-peak period, and Mr Ogihara drove us down to the temples and shrines, and on the day of our departure drove us to the train station.

Dining Room at Tokanso

Tokanso was one of the least expensive ryokan that we stayed in during our trip, but was one of our favourites. Our room had loads of space for the kids to run around in (there were actually 3 different areas plus balcony and toilet), it was clean (if a little tired and run down), and the staff were friendly and kind. They also had a definite sense of humour; my son put on an impromptu 'magic' show in the lobby which stopped all work and had them laughing fit to bust! There is a great view of the gardens from the baths, which are also spacious and a perfect temperature for thawing bones frozen from a days rambling around the shrines. The meals were plentiful and excellent and included in the price of the room!

bunk bed - Japanese style

I really enjoyed my 3-night stay here. There are 4 rooms of bunk beds, linens and blankets are included. It has a traditional bath tub and a shower, gender-separated. This place is homey compare to the hostels in Tokyo. You can also have a full dinner here for 840 yen, prepare by the hostess, with appetizer, salad, soup, rice, main dish and fruits. This is a really good deal! Highly recommended!

The room that I was in has 2 bunk beds and it had a window view of the river. You could hear the running river at night, and enjoy the sunrise if you get up early!

The hostel has a traditional bath and a shower. You can soak your tiredness away in the hot bath after a day's walk!

dinner time

A traditional Japanese welcome with tea.
Fantastic dinner served in traditional setting.
Breakfast in the cafe with a glass wall looking out over a stream.
Segregated hot springs (private springs available on request) and very comfortable, traditional rooms.
The service is impeccable, but only Japanese is spoken.
I would reccomend this very highly.

The entire experience was a highlight of visiting Nikko.

One of several fine pensions located in the mountains around Nikko. This pension offers its guests a chance to spend the night surrounded by Japan's natural beauty and even relax in your own private outdoor bath.
Costs range from 7500 yen to 12,000 yen a night with dinner and breakfast included. There is even an all-you-can-eat dessert cart for an extra 800 yen.

The best part was being able to jump in the private outdoor Japanese bath (rotenburo) any time we wanted.

Nikko Kanaya Hotel was established in 1873, or year 6 of the Meiji era, and therefore the oldest continuously operating resort hotel in Japan.

All the rooms are western-style, and have been refurbished. One of the many striking features of the buildings for both guests and visitors is to take in the large number of ornate carvings, patterned on those of the nearby Toshogu Shrine, at different places throughout the buildings. This hotel is within walking distance of the Toshogu Shrine.

There are approximately 40 hotels in Nikko with four of them being Western-style. Prices range from Y3,000 with two meals to Y20,000 yen with two meals. In Japan these rates are generally 'per person.'

This small and cosy hostel is located at the riverside, and can be reached via a couple of narrow paths. The hostel is run by a friendly Japanese lady who literally makes you feel at home: she really is the mother of all hostel guests...

Rooms consist of bunk beds. Taking a shower (Japanese style!) is only possible between certain hours in the evening; the hostel owner will pick you up and bring you the bathroom. Every guest receives a pair of Japanese slippers at the hostel entrance. There are special 'toilet slippers' as well... Continental breakfast is available upon request.

Directions: From Nikko railway station, follow the main road. All the way at the end, there is a sign "Daiyagawa Youth Hostel". Follow it and you will find the hostel. The entrance is at the back.
