 | Cologne Reviews | Tips 1 - 10 of 172 | | I didn't have to look for other accommodation options too long. As soon as I realized I'll be travelling to Cologne alone Sabsi offered me to stay at her place. It is not in Cologne at all but in nearby Düsseldorf. Free flight in green Lupi on the autobahn is included in the package. (Sabsi claims Lupi can't go over 160 km/h but I'm sure we were flying at a speed of at least 297 km/h.) Here is the the photo of Sabsi's car (Lupi) in one nice neighbourhood in Düsseldorf where hotel Sabsi will move as soon as Sabsi wins the lottery.
Since the hotel serves only Coke for breakfast (how weird is that?) if you want something warm that normal people normally take for breakfast you'll have to make it yourself. I made coffee with milk and it was great with the breakfast that was already served on the table consisting of fresh bread and half of the food you can buy in nearby supermarket. Hotel Kunibert der Fiese was one of a few available accomodations in the city, so I was kinda forced to book it. Actually, March 4 is D day in Cologne when big international fair starts and one have to be very lucky to find free accomodation at that time. There exist very strange rule regarding prices for hotels during that period, most of the prices are tripled!? I paid 55,00 Euros for the first night plus 3,00 for reservation fee to the Cologne Tourist Office. The second night, however, cost me 159,00, which made me feel robbed for that type of the room. Actually, although double, the room is very small with equally small bathroom and TV-set. Not to mentioned that I had light in the lobby and bathroom only and nobody cares to fix it during my stay.
The hotel is perfectly positioned, on the left bank of the river Rhein and less then five minutes walking to the cathedral and all major sights of the city. It is three stars hotel but, in my opinion, it deserves one star only. Breakfest, however, wasn't that bad. It is the fact that most of the European three stars hotels offers much higher starndards than Kunibert der Fiese. Leave a Comment

We had an amazing time in Cologne and partly that was to do with this hostel and the fab people that we met whilst here! There are two Station hostels in Cologne, the one that I stayed in is not the one with the popular Station Bar...its the one located on Marzellenstrasse. Its a funky hostel and very popular, its clean with plenty of shower rooms, a well equipped kitchen, great staff with local knowledge, a lounge area, and the downstairs reception area come bar! The hostel is extremely central, right near the Hauptbahnhof and a 5 minute walk from the Dom area.
On our first night in Cologne we stayed in a 5 bed dorm which cost 15euro per person - this was a bargain! The beds were comfy and the rooms spacious. On our second night here we stayed in a 2bed room, the cost for this was 40euro and was just as comfortable as the dorm - it just offered some added privacy. I did manage to see one of the double rooms with private bathrooms...these were much more luxurious and when I visit Cologne again I definatly take this option! As my initial plan was to visit Cologne together with my sister I was looking for a cheap hotel and found this one in central Cologne. They offered double rooms for a special weekend price of only 47 Eur - what I've seen from the map the hotel is situated in city centre (at a walking distance from the Cathedral) and what I've seen on the Internet seemed quite OK. Unfortunately my sister had to cancel her trip to Cologne and this meant that the price of 47 Eur was no longer cheap for myself only so I had to cancel and look for accommodation elsewhere. If visiting Cologne again I would definitely try this hotel. Sorry, I can't write any inside tips now. Leave a Comment

The hotel is about 10 minutes to walk from the train station .We had booked a standard double, but for some reason were upgraded . So we had a really large room with a very spacious bathroom. The rooms are done in British style, complete with kettle and tea/coffee tray. A very good idea! Breakfast was buffet style and as most often in the Best Western hotels it was enough to last you until late afternoon. The minibar was disappointing.Usually I don't take anything from it,but we had come back from a day of sightseeing, were cold and wet - snow and rain storms that weekend! - so I took a hot shower and didn't want to go out again. When I opened the minibar, hoping for a Kölsch, all I found was mineral water and coke. So I had a hot tea instead. I was told later, that there is a 24 hour bar, but they would put some Kölsch in the minibar, should I stay with them again. (I fear they put an alcoholic sign next to my name in their computer.)
The staff was very friendly. We had a large double bed with one large duvet. I prefer to have one of my own and the lady at reception came up to our room, after her shift was over! and gave us a second one.I thought that was very friendly of her, as I'm sure she was tired and would have liked to go home . In May 2008, I stayed at the Hotel Domstern for a total of 3 nights. It is within easy walking distance of the Cologne Hauptbahnoff (central train station) and the Cathedral. Therefore, I was able to get to the hotel from the train station without having to pay for a cab. The Hotel Domstern was formerly known as the Hotel Domgarten. The hotel was renamed the Hotel Domstern in October 2007. Since the renaming, the hotel has been operated exclusively as a nonsmoking venue. All public areas are also completely smoke free. The hotel is not luxurious, but it is extremely clean and well-maintained. In addition to the great location, the best feature of this hotel is its terrific service. The staff is professional and friendly -- and they do their best to ensure that you enjoy your stay. On the first evening of my stay, I told them the type of restaurant that I was looking for -- and a member of the staff told me my options and the one that he recommended. Also, when I later asked another staff member about the trains from Cologne to Duesseldorf, he printed the morning's train schedule for me. In the morning, the hotel has a great breakfast buffet with a great selection. At each table, the staff also provides a small print-out of the day's weather forecast. In a nutshell, the Hotel Domstern is a wonderful, reasonably-priced hotel in the center of Cologne with outstanding service. Highly recommended!

I would really like to recommend the Hayk Hotel for your stay in Cologne. It's one of the best hotel locations I have ever stayed on. It's located just by the river Rhine, and is just some minutes walk away from the old part of the town. The people working on the hotel could though not speak many words in English, so you better bring the German dictionary. Leave a Comment

I stayed at the 4* Hotel Kaiser am Wienerplatz for 7 nights in July 2006. The hotel was offering a special promotional summer rate of 45 Euros per night for a private single with breakfast included at the time of my visit. Location This small hotel is located in the suburb of Mulheim, a 10 minute journey from central Cologne by public transport (see my transport tip for more details). Mulheim itself has plenty of shops, restaurants, fast food joints, supermarkets and Internet cafes. The hotel is located just 20m from the large Wienerplatz square which has a beer garden at its centre and contains the Stadtbahn station for travelling into Cologne. Bedroom My room contained a single bed, satellite TV (BBC World, CNN, MTV and 30+ German channels), a walk in shower cubicle, a separate toilet and washbasin room, a desk and chair, a comfortable cushioned chair, a telephone, an iron and ironing board, a large wardrobe, a shelf above the bed, artwork on the walls and a series of vases with flowers in. The room consisted of a carpeted hallway leading into a separate bedroom with a wooden floor and a large rug on the floor. The room didn't have air conditioning and did tend to be very hot at nights. There were no coffee and tea making facilities provided, nor a mini bar, but I believe that some rooms do contain a mini bar. Maid service was carried out daily and fresh towels were provided each day.
. Hotel The hotel operates a 24 hour reception, with friendly staff and a few promotional leaflets, free maps and city guides. There is a hotel bar that opens daily at 6pm. A small car park is located at the rear of the hotel for the use of guests. Breakfast The buffet breakfast (included in the price of the room) is excellent. It is served between 6am and 10am in the ground floor dining room and offers a huge choice of food and drink. For example, you can choose from: - cereals: about a dozen choices of cornflakes, muesli, coco pops, cereals with fruit, nuts, chocolate pieces; - a hot plate containing smoked bacon, sausages, pepperoni, scrambled eggs; - a huge selection of different bread rolls, sliced bread, croissants; - yoghurts: a large selection of yoghurt pots and jugs of Greek yoghurt; - fruit: a large bowl of fruit salad (strawberries, kiwi, grapes, apricot, orange, apple) and a selection of fresh fruit and dried fruit pieces; - cuts of cold meat, a variety of cheeses, boiled eggs, fish, prawns, salad items; - a selection of biscuits, cakes and sweets; - orange, pineapple and grapefruit juices and a choice of tea or coffee. I booked via www.bookings.org but the hotel would prefer you to book directly. I would suggest that you check the special offers on bookings.org and then contact the hotel directly to make sure that they will offer you the special rates. Presumably they will do, but if not, book via bookings.org instead. An excellent value hotel with a superb breakfast included in the price. Not centrally located, but Cologne is just a short 10 minute tram or train ride away. Highly recommended!! Walking distance (5 mins) from the Hobf train station. Some rooms have views of the cathedral. Rooms are spacious with big closets and clean bathrooms with hairdryer. Staff is especially friendly and helpful. They are on call 24 hrs, and even helped me with train reservations late in the night. Lots of restaurants in the area. Hotel restaurant is on the street floor facing the Dom square - it serves continental cuisine at reasonable prices. Walking distance to the old part of town and the k-d dock area.
