Shocked by the expense of accommodation in North America, I decided to save money by taking advantage of my HI membership and staying in HI hostels in the major cities I would stop in. HI Vancouver Downtown was my first North American base.
The hostel dorms are a little cramped - four bunks in a narrow room, but the lockers are a fair size to stow big backpacks in. The bathrooms are adequate. The hostel is located off the colurful Davies Street, not actually in the city centre, but more in a residential area, which makes the area feel nicer at night. Bus #6 is your main route into town and from there you can easily explore Vancouver. The trip to/from the city centre / waterfront is about 15 minutes out of peak traffic time.
What lifted my stay here from the ordinary to the above ordinary was the wonderful breakfasts at the hostel. Apart from one or two outstanding hostels in southern Europe, I have never encountered such good quality breakfasts. To label the breakfast a buffet is entirely accurate, with cereals, delicious porridge, toast, muffins, bagels and fresh fruit all laid out. It really was unexpected and a great way to start a busy day of sightseeing.
The staff at this hostel are really friendly and helpful as well. Just tell the driver where you want to go.

The HI Hostel is located in the West End of Downtown, about 3 blocks from the beach, and English Bay.
I had visitors stay there for 3 days, and they were very happy with the place. It was cheap, clean and a good central place to be. It is within walking distance of English Bay, Denman, Robson, Stanley Park, etc.
