This is as I said in my intro one of the mid-priced lodging options in the Manaus area. Accommodation is in 32 individual wooden huts, each with a small deck in front (complete with hammock) and basic en suite facilities consisting of toilet, wash basin and cold water shower. Don’t worry about the latter – the temperatures here are such that you won’t be wanting a hot shower at any time during your stay! There is battery-run electric lighting in the evenings only – candles and matches were supplied but I recommend you take a torch too. The huts don’t have air-conditioning – however at night the temperature drops sufficiently that with no glass in the windows (just a screen to keep out insects) you won’t be kept awake through being too hot. You may though be disturbed by noise: when the resident green parrots finally quieten down for the night a chorus of bull-frogs and insects begins, and we found there were only a few peaceful hours in the dead of night before we were woken early by more frogs and the parrots starting again.

All meals are included in your bill, as are all activities. We enjoyed excellent breakfasts with a good selection of bread and pastries and of tropical fruit – I particularly liked the star-fruit juice. Lunch and dinner were buffet style with local delicacies such as cat-fish and again a great selection of tropical fruits. There is also a small bar area (open air as is the restaurant) with cold beers and other alcoholic and soft drinks for sale, and a small shop selling locally-made souvenirs – my father-in-law was thrilled with the blow pipe we bought him, though to the best of my knowledge has never tried to fire it!

A standard package here consists of two or three nights (3-day packages currently start at US$440 per person) and during your stay you’ll be offered the chance to participate in a range of activities. We went on the following:
    ~ jungle walk
    ~ visit to local village
    ~ back-water boat ride
    ~ night-time caiman viewing
I’ve described each of these in more detail in my Things to Do tips. You can also go for short walks on your own in the immediate area of the lodge, though wandering too far afield is discouraged, for obvious reasons.

From what I’ve read all the jungle accommodation options offer a similar range of activities, so it’s best to make your choice based on the degree of luxury you want and are able to pay for, or conversely on how close you want to feel to nature. Whatever you choose, this is an unforgettable experience.

It’s also worth noting that the Frommer website recommends this as the best of the options close to the city, and therefore a good choice for travellers with limited time. In their words: “the Amazon Village is a class act – owners treat guides well and do a good job presenting the rainforest.”

By the way, I’ve put the URL below but when I tried the website recently I could only get the German-language pages to load, not the English. The map there will give you an idea how relatively close to civilisation this is, al though I can assure you it won’t feel like that while you’re there!

I have saved a fortune, by booking online for the Tropical Hotel, Manaus.
    I found a webite http://www.viverde.com.br/

I managed to get a room for less than US$60, when every other travel company, including the hotel its self, were charging in excess of US$100.

And of course, with the exchange rate being the way it is, I get a room at this supposed 5 star hotel, for under £40. I would be hard pushed to get a deal like this in the UK.

Heliconia Jungle Lodge: Rustic Jungle Getaway
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • About 3.5 hours from Leticia in Brazil on a lagoon off the Javari river Heliconias is a place to really get into the Amazons. The logde consists of a large common building where meals are served and several cabins, capable of holding 2 to 12 people. Each cabin has at least one private bathroom and cold water shower and all are screened in and mosquito netted.

There is no electricity, just a generator lighting up the main building from 6 to 10 everynight.

It is a basic accomidation but this is a great jumping off point to fish pirana, canoe, swim, birdwatch, meet local people surviving on the river, and basicly see the Jungle.

Heliconia has experienced guides and a pet Scarlet macaw, toucan, amongst other birds. I am generally against wild animals made pets but I admit I loved hanging out with the timy monkey that prowles the main building.

Another interesting thing. The bathroom and Shower are only walled in on 3 sides so you get to look out at the jungle, and I suppose the jungle looks in at you while you are using them.

Tropical: Plenty of hotels in Manaus
  • Tip Rating:

  • Enjoyed my stay for a couple of days in Hotel Tropical. And would recomend it to anyone. If your looking for a lower budget hotel, then you will have no trouble finding one.

Facilities were nice. A nice little mini zoo to get you in the mood for getting out to the forest in search of wilder animals.

    Amazon Lodge: Amazon's amazing lodge
  • Satisfaction:
  • Stayed for five days and really enjoyed it. Location amazing in the middle of the amazon, floating. Bedrooms basic but comfortable. Communal cold showers (its all you'll want due to the heat). Three full fresh meals the fish was fantastic. Small bar at night but usually too tired to stay up late but plenty of beer. Environmentally conscious. Hammocks to doze in after lunch when it is too hot to go out and its safe to go swiming in the vicinty of the lodge. Would recommend to anyone that wants to get away from it and relax with nature

Amazing views, all rooms face onto the river, awoken at 5.30 every morning by the howler monkeys and at this time able to see the freshwater dolphins swiming around the lodge. Good trips in the morning and afternoon including alligator hunting at night, pirahana fishing and jungle trekking. Our guide Danny spoke very good english and was a native so very informative. Didn't want to leave. The electricity is only on for a few hours at night and has a tendency to cut out occassionally so make sure you take a torch price around $400 per person for four nights stay with three meals

    Ariau Village: Ariau towers
  • Satisfaction:
  • This is a hotel about 3 1/2 hours down the Amazon river from Manaus. You can book it with any travel agent knowledgeable with Brazil. A travel agent in Brazil will get you cheaper than one that is abroad...(one more middle person to pay...)

Its a lodge on top of a forest canope, with little catwalks between buildings.
There are monkeys and macaws who are always there waiting to get some handouts from the tourists.
They take you on several tours to see the region.
They have rooms with a/c which you will need as its really hot! and humid!
There is also a restaurant and a tiny beach in the back side. They offer some shows at night.

Hotel tropical: Best hotel in Manaus
  • Satisfaction:
  • nice but expensive. close to the docks where you catch boats to more distant villages on the amazon river. Best village is Ariau towers.

Ariau towers is full of monkeys and macaws. Rooms have air cond. they are rustic in style but very confortable. Foods were home cooked style from the region and quite good.
Book the trip with a brazilian agency in Rio because from abroad they charge you inflated prices sometimes 3 times as much!

    Jungle Lodges
If you opt to stay in a jungle lodge there are some luxuries you might have to live without. Hot water is not needed since in the middle of the day, it gets hot and a cold shower is refreshing. Heat is not necessary since it is normally hot and humid. Air conditioning might be needed in the middle of day but in the evening it is cool and can get a little cold but the temperature is comfortable enough to sleep at.

No heat, no hot water and no air conditioning. Open air jungle lodge.
