    Portuguese & Angolan mixed culture
  • Tip Rating:
  • Angola and Portugal share 500 hundred years of common history. Those five centuries have definitely left their marks in their cultures.

Many Portuguese still carry fond memories of their past time lived in Angola. Many still dream about returning to this African country.

No other country and no other people will understand Angola better than Portugal and the Portuguese. Friendship between these two countries will always be there.

The picture of this tip, which features Portuguese traditional culture, is a painting in one wall of an Angolan restaurant in Luanda.

    ENGLISH - Everithing could be...
  • Tip Rating:
  • ENGLISH - Everithing could be very nice. Just wait a few years more...
PORTUGUÊS - Poderia haver coisas óptimas. Vamos esperar uns anos...
FRANÇAIS - Tout pourrait être splendide. Attendons quelques années...

ENGLISH - When I spent six months working in Angola, every saturday and every sunday:
Riding (as a matter of fact, I learned from experience)and swimming at KM17 (places are called like that, number of km from Luanda) where a few old and scarved horses survived.

The Palanca Negra - The Giant Sable of Angola
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Giant Sable (Hippotragus niger variani) - the Palanca negra - is a national icon in Angola.
Even the players of the Football National Team are known as Palancas Negras.

"The giant sable (Hippotragus niger variani) is a beautiful animal that is unique to Angola" /// - Bjørn Hallstein Holte (more here).

"The most striking characteristics of the Giant Sable, a subspecies of the common sable antelope, are its long recurving horns which rise almost vertically above its head before curving backwards and the absence of the full white eye-to-nose line which occurs on the face of the better-known sable antelope." /// - www.kissama.org (more here).

    Angola General Tips Tip (Untitled)
  • Tip Rating:
  • A guy from the embassy took me into the dark back alleys of Luanda one evening. I could hardly see anything. Then he stopped the car and told me we were getting out here...My eyes got used to the dark, and I saw some women on the side of the road with small stalls. When we got out they approached us, and my friend from the embassy negotiated in Portugeese. We sat down in the side of the road, and was served beer, and the best tasting chicken I've ever had....I will never forget this experience.

After two years I found alot...
After two years I found alot of nice restaurants and good places to have a decent meal. As a portuguese I tried to found the best of my country cuisinne in this country...

As I saw in a few VT pages about Angola... this country isnt definetly a tourist country (in a few decades but not now)...

...hereunder find the names and places of good restaurants in Luanda:
    a) Miramar´s GuestHouse - probably the finest little restaurant u can find; nice international cuisine made with 'charme' and 'savoir faire'. The maitre (Mr.Paixão Micas) is very pleasant and atencious...tell him u go by my tip ;)
    b) Lua Cheia - best quality/price in Luanda... the owner himself fishes during weekend to sell at mondays lunch ...the portuguese 'tapas' are delicious. The Chief is his wife so u can imagine the fine cuisine u can expect. Mr. Zé Souto, the owner deserves the premium for the best 'petisco' in Luanda... u can find it on the street that connects US embassy with S.Paulo market, after Norweign compound check in your left...
    c) Rialto - u dont missed, everybody nows it... in Marginal (Bay Av) in front of petrol station... u have good Pizzas and better 'spaghetti'
    d) Coconut´s - on the beach, best French 'savoi-faire'. Fair price 4 Luanda.
