 | Benin Off the Beaten Path | Tips 1 - 8 of 8 | | Popular Off the Beaten Path | Other Off the Beaten Path Tips | All Tips (8) If you are heading to Northern Benin or on to Niger, and you have the time, consider taking the train. It is surprisingly comfortable, it travels away from the roads to some slightly remoter villages, and is much less crowded than a bush taxi. The down side is that it is slower and only goes to Parakou, but Parakou is a pleasant enough place to make a stop before continuing on to Pendjari National Park or Niger. Leave a Comment

We were introduced to a witchdoctor of the village. This is a photo of her. We were told that in her earlier days that she was able place curses on people and that she would eat human flesh. We had a church service in this village and she was in the service that night and was saved. Leave a Comment

Grand Popo is on the coast just 85km from Cotonou. The road is good all the way so it's an easy journey by car - we had our own vehicle. There is plenty to do and see in Grand Popo but it is so laid back and relaxed that it is very easy just to do nothing and relax on the lovely big sandy beach, which stretches all the way to Togo. The sea is really too rough to swim in though. Things to do include: Boat trip on the Mono River, visit the Mangroves and Les Bouches du Roi. Visit a River Village and see salt making Explore the run down charming old town Walk down the beach to the fishing village Chill out on the beach There are plenty of places to stay - I stayed at the Auberge Grand Popo which was gorgeous, and the restaurants are very good too. See my Grand Popo pages for more details.

When I lived there all of the country was kind of off the beaten path. And it probably still is. Leave a Comment

If you are in Benin dont spend all the time in the cities. Go out to visit the small villages. There you find the "real Africa". Leave a Comment
