African Studies Middlemen of the Cameroons Rivers ISBN: 0-521-56664-9 1999 The Duala people entered the international scene as merchant-brokers for precolonial trade in ivory, slaves and palm products. Under colonial rule they used the advantages gained from earlier riverain tradeto develop cocoa plantations and provide their children with exceptional levels of European education. At the same time they came into early conflict with both german and french regimes and played a leading - if ultimately unsuccessful - role in anti-colonial politicts. In tracing these changing economic and political roles, this book also examines the growing conciousness of the Duala as an ethic group and uses their history to shed new light on the history of "middleman" communities in surrounding regions of West and Central Africa. Cameroon Studies Kingdom of Mount Cameroon ISBN: 1-57181-044-7 1996 The Bakweri people of Mount Cameroon, have had a varied and at times exciting history which had brought them into contact, not only with other West African peoples, but with mercants, missionaries, soldiers and administrators from Portugal, Holland, England, Jamaica, Sweden, Germany and more recently France. Edwin Ardener, the distinguished social anthropologist who spoke their language, wrote a number of studies on the culture and history of the Bakweri kingdom. The book covers the early contacts with the Portuguese and Dutch from the seventeenth century, the arrival of the missionaries in the nineteenth century, the dramatic defeat of the first German punitive expedition, the subsequent establishment by the Germans of the plantation system and the British trustship period until independence in 1961 as part of the Federal Republic of Cameroon. Jean Mentens Hakken in Kameroen ISBN: 90-6728-131-x 2001 In Cameroon, as in many other countries in the South, a process of deforestation is taking place directly and indirectly caused by intensive industrial logging. As a consequence of this, illegal exploitation of wood and commercial hunting have rapidly been added to "legal" logging, using the new highways as an access to the forest. Experts foresee that some of the large mammals in Cameroon will shortly disappear if this hunting is not put to a stop. Nearly all types of mammals and reptiles are exhibited on the urban markets. Gorilla and elephant meat is sold at high prices in the best restaurants. Theoretically it is forbidden to hunt these species and sell the meat or other parts of gorillas and chimpanzees, but this prohibition is widely transgressed. This book tells the story of the ( illegal) logging in Cameroon. Leave a Comment

A rucksack over a suitcase anyday. Travel is hard work in cameroon so the comfier the better.
A good pair of waterproof, breathable hiking boots are essential. Along with a lightweight waterproof jacket in case of any showers.
A good razor and shaving foam/soap. If you wear perfume or aftershave bring it with you as you cannot buy it here. Sunscreen and mozzi repellant are essentail too. Don't forget to bring anti malaria tablets and take all your vaccinations.
A good digital camera and the cables to upload your photos onto the internet.
Depending on the type of holiday you are after will depend on what you should bring but if you are into trekking and outdoor pursuits then a tent, sleeping bag, mozzi net, first aid kit and water purifying tablets are a good idea.
If you are a posh traveller, like your home comforts or will be staying for a long term then bring the all in one entertainment system - a PS2! The slim line PS2 weighs less than a kilo and takes up hardly any space in your bag. You can plug it into any TV in your hotel or accomodation and listen to CD's, watch DVD's or play computer games if you are really bored!
