 | Eritrea General Tips | Tips 1 - 10 of 10 | | Popular General Tips | Other General Tips Tips | All Tips (10) While some of the banks in Eritrea are so beautiful they are worth a look for the architecture alone, you should avoid monetary transactions with any of them! The reason is simple: there is a very active and obvious black-market, giving much better than the official rate for your CASH dollars. For this reason, you should not bring money in form of travellers cheques or credit cards to Eritrea - these, as well as bank transfers, will put you in the hands of government-owned banks giving you the lousy official rate. Eritrea has few embassies around the World. In Africa, you can find them in Egypt, Sudan and Djibouti, but NOT in Ethiopia! Overseas, there are Eritrean embassies in the USA, the UK, France, Germany and Italy, as well as Yemen. Visas are usually issued in 1 day if necessary at a cost of 40-50 USD. Leave a Comment

Burocracy is alive and well in Eritrea, unfortunately. Even though you have already needed a visa to enter the country, you will need extra permits to visit just about anything of interest. These include: ~ Travel Permits Required to go anywhere besides Asmara, Massawa and Keren. Easy to get at the Tourism Office in Asmara, and free. However for certain politically sensitive areas you just won't get a permit. ~ Archeological Site Permits These must be obtained at the National Museum in Asmara, not at the sites themselves. They cost 50 Nakfas per site. ~ Monastery Permits To visit monasteries, you must get a permit in advance from the headquarters of the Orthodox church in Asmara. This costs 70 Nakfas per visit. ~ Island Permits To visit the Dahlak Islands off Massawa, you must get a permit from the Eritrean Shipping Lines office in Massawa. This will cost you 20 USD! While print film is easy to get, the only place where I could find slide film in Eritrea was this shop in Asmara, near the entrance to the presidential palace north of the western end of Harnet Avenue. Stock up on film here (or bring enough from home) as you can't count on finding what you need once out in the country, and as Eritrea can be very photogenic, your film may run out more quickly than expected! Eritrea has some very beautiful and rugged landscape. Diverse in that you can go from Asmara (at 2300 Meters ASL) to Massawa, a port city on the Red Sea). The people of Eritrea, and especially the people of Asmara, are warm and friendly to foreigners. They are proud of their country and will endeavor to make your stay a pleasant one. Crime is virtually non-existent in Asmara. Leave a Comment

One more advise, in addition to declaring all your hard currency on arrival and keeping receipts while in Eritrea, do not use non authorized money changers. The government is very strict on this and you will be requested to show the balance of your money and all the changes you made on departure. The only authorized money changing agency is called Himbol. Enjoy! Leave a Comment

The only place in Eritrea that I travelled was the port city of Massawa. A town of 20,000, most of it lies in complete destruction from 30 years of war with Eritrea. There are only a couple of restaraunts that serve either fish and shrimp only and a number of small bars (20 seats) that serve either whiskey or one brand of a local beer. By far the most interesting part of Massawa were the war-torn back streets and alleys.
Though Eritrea is not a place I would choose to vacation, it is fascinating to see how people live in all parts of the world. The people in Eritrea are friendly though the economy is so repressed with a lack of industry that there is very little to do. I did enjoy walking the town and seeing how people live. Leave a Comment
