 | Eritrea Shopping | Tips 1 - 6 of 6 | | Popular Shopping | Other Shopping Tips | All Tips (6) Well, any way I look at it, Eritrea is hardly a shoppers' paradise. much of what is for sale in Asmara, be it clothing or "typically African" carvings, has in fact been imported from elsewhere. If you are desperate to find some authentic local handicrafts, the markets are the places to head for. You can find some nice, rustic pottery used for traditional coffee ceremonies, and also some interesting woven trays. You can also find some old, traditional silver jewellery and maybe swords. And that's about it! Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Most shops that sell shoes will have locally-made sandals. I bought mine in Keren, but they should be available everywhere.
During the fight against the Dergue, and for Eritrean independence in the '80es, Eritrean soldiers had sandals made out of old tires and strips of rubber. These are not simple flip-flops, but come with heal straps etc. Use them when bathing (they will stay on in the water), desert hiking, take them home as presents. The brand name is BARKA.
At 10-12 Nakfa (in 2000) these are excellent value. Leave a Comment Theme: Shoes

The book "Mai Weini: A highland village in Eritrea" is an excellent introduction to the "study of the people, their livelihood and land tenure during times of turbulence" written by a Norwegian PhD student. It is a comprehensive book relating to the Kebessa highlands of Eritrea. The intro section covers basic history, ethnicity etc. of Eritrea in a critical way. The book is probably for the more intrepid travellers. Published 1989. Excellent book!

Red Sea Press Inc.s books are distributed to bok shops and souver\nir/expat geared shops in Eritrea and elsewhere in the Region. Look for Eritrea topics here.
E.g. Mai Weini: A highland village in Eritrea. Plenty of others. But heavy-duty books, not Donald Duck.
Varies, but priced in the US. Leave a Comment Theme: BooksAddress: P.O.Box 48, Asmara, Eritrea, and Lawrenceville, NJOther Contact: 11-D Princess Rd, Lawrenceville

The Market in the city of Keren in northern Eritrea is famous for its cheap silver and gold. Shop til you drop..Or do as my colleague Magne - look for clothes to your wife.... Leave a Comment Theme: Antiques
