Visit to villages
  • Tip Rating:
  • When you in Lesotho it's worth not to stay in Maseru, but go up country.
Every where in Lesotho are nice small villages to visit. We visited some villages at the plain and some at the foot of the escarpment. In many villages you will see the traditional round huts, made of the natural materials of the countryside.
The Basotho people are very hospitable. They like to help you and are proud to show some sights in their neighbourhood.

The Basotho pony is famous because it can easily move in rough mountaineous areas without breaking its legs. With its soft hoofs the pony has more grip a the rough and irregular soil. The possesion of a pony is rather common in Lesotho.
It's nice to make a ponyride during your stay in Lesotho. There is a Pony Trekking Centre, but also at many lodges you can arrange the hiring of a pony.
We made a half day tour to a nice village in the mountains.
It is not necessary to be an experienced rider.

    Bushman rock paintings
  • Tip Rating:
  • We had heard there must be some rockpaintings near the village we visited during the pony ride.
Some boys brouhgt us to the place, which is not easy to find on your own.
We had to go under a overhanging rock.
The paintings were a bit fainted, but still clear enough to recognize the four human beings.
There must be more rockpaintings in Lesotho, you have to ask the local people, where you can find them.

To see the four human beings click to enlarge the picture.

Thaba-Bosiu, entrance and visit of the king.
  • Tip Rating:
  • When you climb the Thaba-Bosiu and reach the top, you will see a heap of stones at the entrance. Our guide explained us that it is a custom to bring or take a stone and add this stone to this heap, everytime you enter Thaba-Bosiu.
So he did and so we did.
The guide told us, that the present king Letsie III visits Thaba-Bosiu with his uncle every year at Liberation Day. They slaughter an ox and stay for three days at the mountain.

    Beautifull scenery for hiking
  • Tip Rating:
  • Lesotho is at nice country for hiking or pony riding. The lowest point of ''the kingdom in the sky'' is at 1000M and the highest at 3.500M.
There are beautiful mountains, escarpments, nice valleys and plains with scattered villages to explore.
The Basotho people is friendly, helpful and self-assured.
They speak Sesotho, but also English.

There are good topographic maps of Lesotho for sale at the Land, Surveys & Physical Planning Department in Maseru.

    Thaba-Bosiu or mountain at night

The Thaba-Bosiu or ''mountain at night'' is the fortress of King Moshoeshoe the Great and the most important historical site in Lesotho. At this place Moshoeshoe founded Lesotho in the 19th century.
From the visitors centre down at the road a guide accompanied us to the top of the mountain and told us its history:
".....Between 1828 and 1865 the Basotho atop Thaba-Bosiu repulsed invaders several times, like the Matiwane, the Raiders (Kornnas), the Ndebele of Mzilikazi, the British (Sir George Cathcart's troops) and the Orange Free State Kommando led by Commandant Wepener.
The attack by Wepener troops was the last one in Moshoeshoe's life time. Wepener was killed at the Khubedu Pass ( or Wepener's Pass) ....".
At the top of Thaba-Bosiu was not much to see, but we enjoyed the walk and the explanations of the guide.

Entrance: 5 Rand and a tip for the guide.

    DINOSAUR TRAILS
  • Tip Rating:
  • You can find fossilised footprints of dinosaurs that have been uncovered throughout Lesotho. Some of them are in the same place they were founded (thus some are tricky to find without help of local people). The most important sites are in Qalo, Morija, Masitise, Subeng Stream and Tsikoane in Leribe, Matsieng, Maphutseng near Mohale’s Hoek, and Moyeni.

    TOURIST INFORMATION CENTRE IN MASERU
  • Tip Rating:
  • Don’t miss it. It is in the main road of Kingsway. There you can find a lot of information of anywhere in the country. They can help you to find accommodation in the city. They have brochures, maps, postcards… and a lot of very useful information. BUT, don’t trust in distances (Km). Neither in time needed to arrive to places. Roads are terrible in Lesotho and almost every route takes longer than expected.

    TEYA-TEYANENG
  • Tip Rating:
  • 42 km north of Maseru is the most important craft centre of the country. You can visit lots of shops and also craft centres where locals are making the handicrafts, specially tapestry. It is very interesting to see all the process, the wool, the painting, making the tapestries… And you can buy cheap souvenirs directly in the craft centres. Some of these craft centres are Hatooa-Mose-Mosali; Helang Basali Crafts of Lesotho; Lesotho Handicrafts; Elleloang Weavers; Seeta’s Design Jewellery, all in Teya-Teyaneng, as well as Setsoto Design in Tebetebeng close by.

    PONY-TREKKING
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Basotho are renowned as a nation of horsemen, and for generations the sure-footed Basotho pony has been bred as the ideal form of transport in the rugged mountains. These ponies are ideal for everybody even if you don’t have horse-ride experience.
You can do treks from 1 hour to some days stopping in villages, waterfalls, spectacular views…
