Felt saudade and strangely nostalgic walking down the street where our house used to be, now paved over. the street now is called jalan maulana but i remember it by an english name. it was good to remember my father, olav ha shalom, who used to walk every morning to his job at the old BSP Hospital.. and the patients who would come in the evening with their meagre gifts: fresh vegies, fish etc from the market to consult him at home. It is possible to charter a motorised canoe at the Belait river crossing. You can do a short journey upriver or go on a scenic tour. It's an interesting way to get around anyway. The water taxis seat about ten people. You'll need to negotiate the fee with the driver and give advance notice. The fee to get across the river is less than B$0.50 so I can't imagine it costing that much for a one or two hour charter if you are sharing the costs with others. If you are interesting in yachting on the open sea, contact the Kuala Belait Boat Club on the number below. Leave a Comment Phone: + 673 3 374103

Eventhough KB has completely changed in appearance since my days of youthful exuberance, one thing has not changed: The Market. it still looks and smells the same. Frech vegetables and fresh fish from the river and the sea.. Leave a Comment

Nypa Fruiticans, found in abundance in Borneo and also in other parts of south east asia. this palm has its roots and trunk under the water and only the leaves show over the water level. a pleasant sight indeed. Leave a Comment

This beach has a special significance for me. It was just a few meters away from our wooden home on stilts. you woke up to the waves slapping on the shore and in the evenings i would go for long walks along the beach. No one bathes and before the beach was sealed off to the west, we could walk all the way to the mouth of the river. on this visit, i saw well manicured garden near the beach and many couples just sitting watching the sunset..
