Going out from the Sheraton, right side, take the first street right going uphill. After 300 m climbing, go round the telelecom antenna and there begins a track you can follow for a few km on the hillcrest; you may hear (myself I heard them but could not see) the monkeys barking in the trees, see lots of flowers and birds, we are not used to see generally. From some places you may have a good view over the city and walking more you forget the city, the civilisation, and you are right in the forest! Not the primary original forest, but only nature is there. I Recommend to walk early in the morning, otherwise you will have to carry water, it is hot, very hot here, even under the trees. Visit the Mosque at Bandar Seri Begawan Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin, father of the present Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, built this mosque in the 1950’s and the mosque is named after Sultan Omar himself. It is an impressive sight especially at night when it is floodlit against the dark night sky. Bathed in light, the domes which are coated in gold appear to glow like a shiny golden beacon, calling out to the faithful and promising light in a world of darkness. Leave a Comment Directions: It is just a 10 min walk from the Sheraton Utama hotel and the major landmark in the old part of BSB town. Don’t miss a night viewing if you are overnight in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei!

Take this kind of transportation to go to Kampung Ayer, or, just let the boatman show you around. Hey generally do not speak English but are friendly and try to do their best to show you the interesting things. They can take you to have a view of the Sultan’s Palace from the waterside. You can find them almost everywhere on the port area, waiting for customers. Address: Water sideDirections: Go to the river

On the square in the middle of the shopping centre I saw this big fountain. You can clearly see that money is not a real problem in Brunei. The public buildings are well kept and decorated with large features like for example this fountain. Since I just travelled from busy bustling Bangkok; this calm city with lots of space between buildings, wide roads and quiet streets was quite the contrast. Leave a Comment

Nothing beautiful but a nice ambiance there walking on the bridging between the houses. Kampung Ayer (literally: water village) is a stilt village just opposite the city where it is interesting to have a 2 hours walk and look at the people there; very quiet place, picturesque in some way; hire a taxi boat at the market or on the quay, (1 Brunei $, for one way, 10 to 15 Brunei $, depending on your bargain skills, for a one hour tour), and ask the boatman to make a tour in the water “streets”. Not as romantic as Venetia, but with luck some charming view can be seen like some boats crowded with people going full speed through the water “streets”. From a distance you can already see this impressive mosque: the Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque. It was built to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sultan's reign. This mosque is the largest mosque in Brunei and it is clearly visible along the main route into town from the airport. And as you can see it is beautiful and impressive! I think it is a must see on a visit to Brunei. Leave a Comment

The Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque was built recently by the present sultan, whose name the mosque carries. Not to be outdone by his father, Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin (see pic above), the mosque built by the current sultan also has domes that are gold plated. To me though, the older mosque had more character. Visitors are welcome. Please note that no shoes are allowed inside the mosque and women must cover their arms, legs and head before entering. Not knowing much about the country I was quite surprised with what I saw. Western influence was quite clear, especially in the shopping mall. There were many big shops which names I recognized, with the same products, only now advertised in a different and strange language to me. Leave a Comment

Brunei is a tiny oil-rich Islamic Sultanate which has only around 300.000 inhabitants. I think the country is best known for the enormous wealth of the Sultan. But the population get their share of the wealth too, having one of the highest incomes per capita in the world. There is a price they pay for that though as the country is not a democracy, but is ruled by the Sultan. In the picture you can see the 'Simpor', the flower of Brunei. If you don't get the chance to see this flower for real in Brunei, you can always take a look at the front side of the Brunei one-dollar note, where you will find a picture of the Simpor flower :-) Leave a Comment
