We had this simple food during breakfast before we depart for Liuzhou. It is along one of the stalls towards Nanning wet market. Besides congee/porridge, the stall sells noodles in soup or fried. The stall is quite crowded with locals having their breakfast.
Congee/Porridge - rice boiled with lots water till really soft and almost starchy like a paste or puree. The one that we ordered was pork porridge. The seller scooped the plain porridge out from the big pot into a saucepan, added some marinated pork and ginger and boiled it. She then scooped this into a bowl, topped with with spring onions and a dash of pepper. If you don't like pork, there's a choice of fish and other exotic mix of pork liver, intestine or pork organs. Have it with the "yu tiao" (Chinese deep fried pastry). You just dip the "yu tiao" into the porridge - it's yummy!. Price per bowl of porridge with two sets of "yu tiao" : 4.20yuan Theme: LocalPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: stalls along wet market

Chinese steamed dumplings, called the "Pau" is a delicious snack or a good breakfast meal. It is sold in most eateries or sometimes in stalls specially selling "pau". These dumplings are steamed in big round trays stacked on top of each other. You can see the steam oozing out from the hot trays. This dumpling tastes best when it is eaten hot as the skin is soft and fluffy and the fillings in it is moist and tasty. The prices of these dumplings vary according to the types of fillings. Fillings are of either beans, chopped cabbage and carrot, sesame .... there are also some with meat fillings. Prices are usually stated on the signboard but they are in Chinese. Anyway, you can just buy one and ask for the price. Veggie pau are usually 0.50yuan each. For train rides and long distance bus journeys, dumplings are convenient food to bring along as meals. See another pic attached. "Jiao Qzi" is a type of Chinese dumplings. Seasoned chopped vegetables and meat are wrapped in a little round pastry (think is made of rice flour), and two edges are folded over with some water and it is given a twist to shape it. These are then either steamed or panfried. Steaming it will be in a little round steel/wooden tray. It is usually sold on per tray basis consisting of about 10 "jiao qzi". Cost about 3yuan per tray. (see additional pic attached) Panfried "jiao qzi" is done by light frying it in a big round pan with a little oil until it's slightly brown on the pastry. It comes in a plate of 10 "jiao qzi". Cost is about 3.50 per plate. (see additional pic attached) Eat these little "jiao qzi" hot with the sauces provided : bean sauce (brown) and clear clear soya/vinegar sauce Theme: LocalPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: in most eatery shops

This is a local shop that sells seafood noodles. It is by chance that we saw this shop in one of the side lanes when we were walking along the main street towards Wanda Mall and Chaoyang Guangchang. It was lunch time and we saw many locals taking a queue to order their food. We decided to give it a try. This is a "self service" eatery, meaning, once you placed your order, you will get a number. When your order is ready, they will announce your number and you collect your bowls of food from the "counter"
We ordered 2 different types of noodles. 1) Dried Seafood noodles consists of the flat noodles with slight brown sauce topped with roasted pork , dried shrimps, vegetables and groundnuts. It is served with a bowl of hot clear soup. Price is 7yuan 2) Wet/Soup Seafood noodles also consists of flat noodles with hot soup in it with lots of slices of meat, brown squids and prawns, garnished with lots of spring onions. Price is 7.50yuan We prefer the Wet/Soup seafood noodles as we find it more tasty. Note that serving per portion is big. See picture attached for item (2) and also the front of the shop. Most of the shops or restaurants will almost have the same food. You pay as you order. Ask for the price and check out the portion first before confirming your order
Here are a couple of nice specialities which we have sampled :- (see more pictures attached) Pic 1 : Nice hot toasted buns. Fillings are of vegetables and glass noodles. If you really want to try out the variety of dishes what the locals eat, why not try the economy meals that are sold in many outlets. They called it the "Fast Food" in China. Go during lunch or dinner hours, you will see the shops display the array of food/dishes for the day - mostly pipping hot. Take your pick. There are really lots to choose from - ranging from vegetarian dishes to meat dishes of fish, pork and beef. Prices from 4yuan to 8yuan. (see another pic attached). It comes with a bowl of rice and soup. For the choice of 2veggies and 1meat dish is 5yuan
Our choice :- (see another picture attached) 1) Snowpeas/Stringbeans/Squids - 5yuan 2) Fish/Egg/Pumpkin - 5yuan Served with rice and Soup. Theme: LocalPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: least expensiveAddress: in most shops/eatery stalls
