 | Nanning Things To Do | Tips 1 - 10 of 17 | | Popular Things To Do | Other Things To Do Tips | All Tips (17) Near the town of Ma San you will find the Jin Lun Cave area. Jin Lun is a famous Chinese leader for whom the cave is named. The cave is one of the ten largest caves in the world. The tickets are 40Yuan per person, which is expensive for an activity in China, I think, but I must say that it's well worth the expenditure. A short walk to the cave entrance with a tour guide and the coolness of the cave overtakes you immediately. The cave is wonderfully lit with multi-color lights to fully appreciate the size of the caverns and shape of the stalactites and stalagmites. The cave features numerous caverns, smaller caves, and many interesting spaces. Toward the end of the nearly 2 hour walk through the caves, the walkway nears the surface, only to plunge down a hundred steps underground. There are several small pools, which lead to a huge lake and a meandering river. There is an awesome reflection pool that perfectly mirrors the ceiling and lights. This was the highlight and grand finale of the tour. Leave a Comment Address: Jin Lun Dong, near Ma San, Nanning

A really cool untouristed traditional 17th century town. It's an easy day trip from Nanning and is well worth the excursion. Ask around at your hotel how to get there as the bus stop and schedule changes frequently. The bus uses a small ferry to cross a river to reach the village. Make sure you find out what time the last bus leaves or at least find out what time your bus driver is leaving as you don't want to be stranded out there.. though I'm sure there are places to stay. You have two options once you arrive.. hire out an ox-cart for the day or just walk around... There are a few english signs outside buildings explaining this and that. There is an interesting Daoist temple and the area around the river is a great place to chill out in the shade and watch the locals. There are some food stalls near the steps down to the water.. Embroidery Balls ("Xiu Qiu") are the best of the embroidery crafts. Jiuzhou in Jingxi, Guangxi is the home of embroidery balls. These embroidery balls are made by hand, traditionally with 3 colours of red, yellow and green. The patterns embroidered on the petals of the balls are usually of plants, animals and lucky words. The "Xiu Qiu" embroidery ball is used to symbolise love. As such, if a girl were to handmade an embroidery ball and gives it to a boy - it means that she has given her heart to him..... awww....such sweet gesture! There is also a custom whereby the event called "Tossing the Xiu Qiu" is held by the girl in seek of a fated life partner. The girl will toss the ball over into the loop to the other side where the boys are. The boy who catches the xiu qiu will be the husband to-be. See another picture attached on this queer custom. Guangxi has been praised as the "base camp" of bronze drums and in Guangxi Sheng Bowuguan (Guangxi Provincial Museum), there is an exhibition hall (on ground floor) solely dedicated to these prized collection of ancient bronze drums. Bronze drums are the representative cultural relics of ancient ethnic groups of South China. In ancient time, bronze drums were taken as a symbol of power and wealth, as a sacred vessel used in religious service and entertainment. If you have a big group coming in for visit in this Museum, there is a guide who will explain the history of the drums in details. We followed a guide along with a group of students. The guide speaks Mandarin. You could try to check if there's an English speaking guide. Besides the bronze drums, there are many stonewares being exhibited here. Don't forget to go to the far end of the hall to check out the largest bronze drum . Most people who go to Yi Ling Yan (Yi Ling Cave) located in Yi Ling village, Shuangqiao, Wu Ming, is 17km away from Nanning, is solely to see the Cave but this scenic spot with its entry fee of 15yuan will throw in a package to cover the Zhuang's customs and cultures. Yi Ling Yan was opened in October 1975 to tourists. There is a guide who will explain to you the history, customs and cultures of the minorities, the Zhuang. The little tour will take you about half an hour. The guide will lead you to steps up the Zhuang village where you will be greeted by "arrival music" - flute and pipes serenade you. Then there will be a group of young girls who will sing the "hill songs". Afterwhich you will arrive at a little hut and you will be served with the "three-tastes tea" , yellow steamed buns" and "five coloured glutionous rice" - the local cuisine and delicacies of the Zhuang tribe. You will then pass through some Zhuang's farming equipments and the process of fermenting the rice wine. You will also pass through a big statue of a scholar where they will encourage to do a little prayers and of course, some donations. Finally you will arrive at the entrance of the cave which you will need to pay an additional 25yuan if you want to go and view the cave. On the 1st floor of Guangxi Sheng Bowuguan (Guangxi Provincial Museum), there are lots of nice exhibits on the cultures and lifestyles of the minorities. Intricate and colourful embroidery on caps, clothes, headgears, shoes, belts, bags, table cloths, window sills etc are displayed. The awesome neddlework of these minorities makes one wonder how much of hardwork and time have been spent even on small items such as the cloth shoes and head bands. There are also tie and dye materials being exhibited. Interesting write-ups on the cultures of the minorites are good read. People's Park or the Renmin Gongyuan (previously called the Bailong Gongyuan) was built in 1951 over a 51.3 hectares of land. It is a recreation park for its subtropical scenic spots and is also an amusement park. We went there during the late afternoon and the walk round the park was really refreshing as the weather was not hot then. There are patches of nice looking lakes with moonshaped bridges. Greens everywhere in the botanical garden. There is also a Monument to the Revolutionary Martyrs being erected which you need to climb up a flight of steps. Lots of joggers and many families enter this park for their evening stroll. The amusement park within the same grounds opens only at about 7.30pm. You will need to pay separately for the rides in the amusement park. Entrance fee is 2yuan Operating hours :9am to 12midnight (for purpose of the amusement park within). See more pictures in my Travelogue on the surroundings of People's Park titled " People's Park (Renmin Gongyuan)" Address: along Zhonghua Road

The Wen Wu Yuan park next to Guangxi Provincial Museum has a separate entrance. If you enter from this entrance instead of through the Museum's entrance, you have to pay like triple!. See my tip on "Different Entrance - Cheaper" under Tourist Trap. This park is very scenic and you get to see the miniature structure of the "Wind & Rain Bridge" . There is also a moon-shaped bridge across a stream and nice little stools for you to relax. Near to this stream and the gigantic drum monument, there is a stage where we sat and watched a series of minorities folk dances (also the bamboo pole dance) and the wedding ceremony of the minorities tribe. The audience is invited to join in the dances and also participate in the wedding ceremony. Lots of laughter and cheering echoed through the park. Performance is at about 11.30am and it's an half hour entertainment. Museum operating hours : 8.30am to 11.30am and 2.30pm to 5.30pm daily Entrance fee : 8yuan per pax Wen Wu Yuan operating hours : 9am to 5pm Entrance fee is :8yuan per pax excluding performances and Museum 28yuan - full package for park, performances and museum visit See more pictures on the cultural dances/wedding ceremony in my Travelogue entitled "Cultural Dances & Wedding Ceremony" Address: Minzu Dadao (Ku Chen Lu), NanningDirections: Board Bus No. 6 in front of Train Station (Zhonghua Road) or Chaoyang Road.
