During the boat cruise, it's really hard to differentiate whether you are in a chinese painting or enjoying the scenery of mountains and river... This attraction is highly recommended ! Leave a Comment

Get a map of Yangshuo. It's pretty concise and it shows you the bicycle route to the various sites if you are interested to take bike rides. The map also shows you the nearby villages of Fuli and Xingping. It is written both in Chinese and English. You can get the map in any guesthouses or at the stalls along West Street.
Price : 6 yuan
The only problem with the map is that the paper quality makes it crumpy and tears easily when folded and handled frequently.

If you walk through the West Street area towards the Pier, you`ll find this landscape.
There isn`t much here, what you see is what you get. But still, it`s worth taking a look at the mountain ranges. Leave a Comment

In many of the restaurants along West Street, their dinning area will be hung with many, many of these recommendation notes and little , little drawings. These are written by people who have patronised the restaurants and have found the food to be good. They will write pieces of notes or do some drawings to express the goodness of the food. Some are quite funny and interesting to read. There are a few shops which really have the whole dining area filled with these little notes on the wall - looks like a good piece of wallpaper! Hmmmm...wonder how many of these are really written by customers..ha..ha..

Lotus seeds, young and old, are sold along the streets of West Street, Pantao area or along any streets in Yangshuo. The young lotus seeds are packed in little leave cones while the old ones are sold together with the stalk of lotus pod. Eating the lotus seeds is said to be nutritious and good for the complexion. For the young lotus seeds, all you need to do is peel off the outer skin of the seed, split the seed into half and remove the stem that is inside (as this is slightly bitter) and pop it into your mouth. For older ones, which are still inside the pod, you just remove them from the pod, and do likewise. The older ones are crunchier and stronger in taste while the young ones are sweeter and of course, more tender. Can't remember how much they cost but it''s pretty cheap.

Most of the roofs of the houses and shops along West Street and other areas in Yangshuo are tiled. They looked so typical of the olden days Chinese houses. Most of the tiles are of grey colour while some are of brick red.

Ok, this is more like what I had been anticipating.
It was a cool day with just the right weather, I couldn`t ask for more. The sceneries began to improve as soon as we got out of town.
That`s about 8 mins ride from town.
There wasn`t much traffic around since this was the off-peak season.
We were in fact surrounded by mountains everywhere I looked.
It was just great & the mountains are different shapes & sizes.
Very different from those of Canada or Switzerland; yet very enchanting!
I felt like a child again, given new toys to explore & play with.

Oranges - sometimes you can get them real sweet and sometimes it slightly sourish. Its about 2yuan for a kati (about 4 oranges)
Turnip - You will see lots of stalls selling tiny looking turnips which are really crunchy and sweet. The flesh is white and you can just peel the skin off by pulling it from the top to the base of the fruit (you don't need a knife to peel it).
Groundnuts - we bought them in a "little net" for 2yuan. It's not roasted but it tastes fine - slightly raw but i guess it's really nutritious since it's almost like "fresh from the ground"
