 | Sanya Restaurants | Tips 1 - 10 of 16 | | Popular Restaurants | Other Restaurants Tips | All Tips (16) At the centre of Dadonghai is a huge marble plaza, with plenty of gaudy neon and huge plate glass windows and white plastic chairs (for God's sake, can't any restaurant ever buy anything better!). The sea and the beach are largely hidden because no-one actually thought about the design of it all. Still the buildings look....errr....like restaurants on a square. But head along the beach beyond this soulless strip, and you come to a small clutch of street vendors and souvenir stands. There you can sit on the cast-iron chairs, under the palm trees, a few metres from the sea. Chilled bottles of Yanjing, Hainan, Tsingtao or Tiger beer help you while the evening away, and they will grill shrimps, aubergines, chicken legs, different types of fish and squid on a barbecue grill. Now THIS is why I came to Sanya. Best evening I've had in ages.
The grilled egg-plant went down well. And the squid. Oh and the shrimps. And the Hainan beer. Mustn't forget about the chicken legs though! Oh, who cares? A great evening out. Well it's the first hut on the right just outside of the Holiday Inn. The tables are right in the beach, in fact you may sink right into the sand if you choose the wrong chair. There are many red buckets filled with all sorts of sea creatures, lots of coconuts, cold beer and other tasty dishes. Watch out for Betty though, sweet and shrewd lady who will pat your pockets and ask questions in order to figure out what to charge you for lunch - also she may pretend to 'misunderstand' you during negotiations (but then speak perfect English a moment later). If you hang around long enough she'll offer you a job waitressing or hacking coconuts. Your pay is lunch, dinner, all the beer you want and 15 rmb a day :).
The baby clams are quite tasty, steamed and then tossed with some fresh ginger, garlic, and soya sauce. Also, if you ask they will spice it up for you some hot peppers but be careful what you wish for. The second hut has colder beer but Betty speaks some English and is really friendly.

The restaurant has some good western food but the prices are a bit steep. A big (but very good) double cheeseburger with fries cost 60rmb. They also had other food Malaysian curry, Thai satay, fish & chips, etc. None of us could complain, in fact we all really enjoyed it - it had some of the best 'western' food I've had in China.
Double cheeseburger - 2 big proper paddies, 2 types of cheese, fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, layered like a big Mac, cooked the way you like and topped with a black olive. Also it comes with a small salad & balsalmic vinegar dressing (haven't had that in months!) and fries. Di Yi Shi Chang or called No.1 market, as well as Chun Yuan, are famous for their fresh, cheap and reasonable price seafood. Once you pick your favorite seafood, you may go to any open restaurant in the market to have your food cooked. Take a seat, enjoy your seafood with a beer, or any drinks. However, food cooked by local chefs, may not be so dilicious as the one you've tried at resort's restaurants.
