 | Hangzhou Off the Beaten Path | Tips 1 - 10 of 24 | | Popular Off the Beaten Path | Other Off the Beaten Path Tips | All Tips (24) We discovered 2 night markets. 1st one is called Hefang/ Wu shan night market which was "renovated" for the benefit of tourists. Bus 155, K8, Y8. The 2nd one at Yudian Road is made up of carts with umbrellas only. Bargaining required. Start from 50% of the price quoted or below. The picture shows a "timekeeper" who would go round sounding his "gong" to inform all about the time at that time. (We always see this in chinese martial arts serials) [see him at the 1st night market] Leave a Comment

Wuzhen, 1 and half hour away from Hangzhou by bus, located in the northeast of Hangzhou, is the famous water town of Zhejiang Province. The town was built along the two sides of the small river, and formed a kind of beautiful rural peaceful view. now it's listed in the candidate of world heritage of UNESCO. for detailed info, please see the website http://www.wz517.com/ Leave a Comment

Why don't you get away from the touristy areas and venture into the small streets behind the main drags of Hangzhou and a few blocks away from the lake? here you will see more of what old Hangzhou must have been like, before blocks were demolished to give way for new residential and commercial buildings and wider roads to accommodate the ever-increasing number of cars. One easy way to get away from the main roads is to walk on the smaller roads running parallell to the bigger ones. There is especially one area which I really appreciate. This is the area just west of Wu Hill and south-southeast of the Bell Tower, between Zhong He Zhong Lu and Wu Hill. Here you will see older buildings, and people making the street their living room and place of business and pleasure. If you are visibly foreign, you will no doubt get a few surprised looks, but do not let that disturb you. You can round it off with a walk up the Hill to the Chenghuang pavilion (see my tip about the Wu Hill.)

Zhou Zhang Village Zhou = Surename Zhou Zhang = house (big one) This place has been labelled by many Chinese they are very commericalize. Its true, very commercialize if you visit in day time, because not many people will stay behind at night, so if you stay at night, you can see the green river, big red lantern along the river. its another story of Zhou Zhang itself. As this picture shows, the two different style snack bar, as a neighbor each other, started their business at nearly the same time! One is KFC, famous on the world, other is a seller of Chinese dim sun, named XINFENG. Here you can realize that how sharp extent of competition in quick food business, local and external. Perhaps, they can double win! Leave a Comment

Good place to meet local people who speak English is so called English Corner at park by Western Lake at northern end of Hubin Road and also in Starbucks Coffee (Xihu Tiandi). I met friends who helped me with sightseeing, shopping and then they even cooked a dinner for me! I`m so lucky! Leave a Comment

I was walking through the sidewalk of west lake. Here is the inner lake which I seldom reached before. HZ ppl rebuilt this area and many of others small lakes around. It's quiet and fresh here, not as crowded as the old famous spots. Leave a Comment
