India & Africa Pavillions: Food at World Expo 2005
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • One of the best things we found about World Expo 2005 was sampling some of the authentic food from the various world pavillions. Although the food areas tend to be quite small and there is not much in the way of seating the servings are more snack sized than a full sit down meal and with so much to see at Expo you won't want to spend too much time hanging around eating anyway. Being able to sample a few dishes from different places around the world was great fun and the quality of the food in the India and Africa pavillions we found to be reasonable.

For a full list of restaraunts & dining options at Expo see the link below.

Curry at the India pavillion was excellent and not too spicy either.
Ethiopian Coffee was also pretty good from the Africa pavillion

  • Tip Rating:
  • KAWAIYA: Try Nagoya's famous flat Kishimen noodles that resemble fettuccini. Kawaiya's delicious kishimen is a bargain at JPY500. If you don't want your noodles plain, order the ebi oroshi kishime, noodles with shrimp tempura and grated daikon radish at JPY1200.
    Regional noodles, inexpensive.

    Noodles!

    MISO NO SUGIMOTO: Whenever I...
  • Tip Rating:
  • MISO NO SUGIMOTO: Whenever I am in Nagoya, I try to eat the delicious sukiyaki that's made with premium Matsuzaka beef. Choose to sit either at the tables and chairs on the first floor or on tatami mats on the second. The menu is less expensive on the first floor.

    I recommend the delicious sukiyaki.

Coco Ichiban, house of curry: Japanese curry is the best
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • For less than $10 you can get probably the best food the Japanese ever made. And it's not even their own: curry. But they made curry into something more than the English or Indians could do. They made it palatable and delicious, and Coco makes curry anyway you like it. Sprinkle it with cheese, and order an extra helping of rice. And take the spicy test. There are ten levels of spicyness and you aren't allowed to try 6-10 unless you've proven you can eat a five. I'm not quite sure how you prove this. Maybe they put your name is some databank or something. But I digress. You gotta try this place. I didn't know I liked curry until I tried Coco.

Ros cas. It's roasted (fried, Japanese style) pork, a very famous local food. Sprinkled with cheese and extra rice for 150 yen. Thanks to Coco I can get a feeling of being full when I leave a restaurant, and for less than 10 bucks.

Sawadee Sumiyoshi: Great Thai Food (Excellent Lunch Specials)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Sawadee Sumiyoshi is a favorite resturant of mine that I frequently go to for lunch. They have an amazing Lunch set with that gives you a choice of 3 main dishes (Green Curry, Pad Krao Pao and Fried Rice) as well as the set which comes with soup, salad and a desert all for 850 Yen. The resturant itself has a great atmosphere and decorated very well. Just be aware tho at lunch time it tends to fill up with the local office workers and they do tend to chain smoke, so request a table away from everyone if possible. They do have a English menu and the staff do speak a bit of English as well as the owner who will sometimes be floating around from time to time.
Here is a sample of things from the menu:
    Lunch menu
    Tom yam goong set ¥1100
(Thailand curry or Thai style fried rice, tom yam goong soup, salad, side dish and dessert)

    Various lunch sets ¥850
(Thai style curry or fried rice with egg on top, cup soup, side dish and dessert)
    All drinks ¥100 with lunch.

    Dinner
Salad Tom Tam Malako(spicy green papaya salad) ¥1554
Special Poh Phier Thod (vegetable spring roll with prawns) ¥1029
Stir fried Papanees Gai (spicy stir fried prawn with coconut milk and hot basil leaves) ¥1260
Appetizer Gaito (deep fried chicken with sweet chillsauce) ¥609
Noodle Bamee Kiew Mao (spicy fried egg noodle with pork) ¥892
Rice Gaeng Kheow Wan (green curry with chicken, eggplant, and coconut milk, served with rice)

    Dessert
Fakuton (pumpkin with sweet coconut milk) ¥525

I recommend any of the lunch sets if you want something fast and tastes great. Good value as well. I like to order from the menu tho and prefer to get the Bameekeemao noodles which are a spicy stirfry or the Khao Soi curry soup with noodles also very spicy!!
