 | Kobe Off the Beaten Path | Tips 1 - 10 of 15 | | Popular Off the Beaten Path | Other Off the Beaten Path Tips | All Tips (15) my home is here, on the slopes of rokko mountain!!! :)) on the mountains there is a lot of wonderful nature, trees, waterfalls, views down to the city, that u can discover by numerous hiking trails up and down the mountain range, which is actually a natural park. u will see boars, racoons, insects the size of ur fist, pretty butterflies and birds :)) once u get up there, either by a challenging climb or by the cable car, u will find cafe, souvenir shops, a couple of hotels etc...yeah, its far away being a wilderness, however, wonderful nature experience right in the city!!! to get there, take the JR or Hankyu line to rokkomichi resp rokko station(less than 10min from sannomiya), then take a bus up the hill to the cable car station, from where u can either take the tram up (15-20min) or hike up (two hours or so with a slow pace). the hike is very steep, so be prepared with proper equipment and some water!!! The Akashi Kaikyo is the longest suspension bridge in the world. It was under the construction when I was there. It would be very interested to see the structure of this bridge. Besides the bridge, there is a Maiko Tower where you can see the bridge from the top. Open hour: 10:00 - 17:00 (In some seasons, it is not closed until 18:00 or 19:00) Leave a Comment Phone: 078-786-1911

The NARUTO WHIRLPOOLS are located a little far from Kobe, but there's no location on VT for where they are. These whirlpools, located in INLAND SEA between SHIKOKU & AWAJI ISLANDS, are one of the world's largest. The best time to go is in the spring and the fall, when the whirlpools can reach up to 30 meters in diameter! Wow! GETTING THERE: TAKE the TOKUSHIMA SHIKI BUS from the east exit of JR SANNOMIYA STATION in Kobe. It costs 2750yen R/T and takes 90 mins to reach NARUTO KOEN (3rd stop). From there, walk 10 mins to NARUTO KOEN and catch a ferry to take you to see the whirlpools. There are a few ferry companies you can take and costs about 2000yen/adult. Leave a Comment

Sorakuen Garden is in the city center of Kobe. Besides the garden, you can see some old houses. The chrysanthemum in the autumn flower exhibition was the biggest I've ever seen. Open hour: 9:00-17:00 (Thursday closed) Leave a Comment

Behind Shin-Kobe train station are walking trails. There is map showing places you can take walks on a board. I came across this waterfall. Spent about 1/2 hour here. From front entrance of Shin-Kobe Station, go right and you will see entrance that will take you to walking trails. Leave a Comment

When attending baseball game at Green Stadium in Kobe or at any NPB baseball stadium in Japan, it is so different than at stadiums in USA. Why? Well the atmosphere is similar to College football game. So much loud cheering and banging of plastic bottle that looks like bowling pins! Some foreigners do not like this for can cause splitting headache? I have read about this and yes can happen. To me it is tolerable and fun to watch/observe! Also-Japanese people like to cheer very loudly there favorite player and do so with so much respect. You also hear banging of drums an team flag waving by spectators. You do hear booing sometimes in crowd and can get ugly at certain stadiums! Hanshin Tigers vs Tokyo/Yomuri Giants at Koshien Stadium is one rivalry I know off where this happens. Kansai people hate the Giants and love there Hanshin Tigers! Generally, it is so safe and very fun to attend/watch baseball game at any Japanese stadium! I especially love watching the people in the stands for they cheer so loud and are just having great time!! On the field, the infield playing surface is dirt and outfield is grass. In USA we have grass infield and outfield! The players fold there caps at center of bill? Why, I am not sure but seems all players in Japan do this. There are many Gajins (foreigners) from USA playing for Japanese teams and doing very well too! Leave a Comment

When in Kobe during months of April to September catch a baseball game at Green Stadium. The local professional baseball team is named the 'Orix Blue Wave'. They have one superstar named Ichiro Suzuki who is probably the best hitter in Japan! Update:March 2001-Ichiro now is in USA playing in the American League for the Seattle Mariners. He is now fullfilling his dream of playing against the best in the world. To get to Green Stadium, get off at Sogo Undo Koen Station (located next to Green Stadium) lies on the Seishin Subway Line, four stops from Shin-Nagata Station. (see map) Leave a Comment
