  • Tip Rating:
  • None - there is no crime, no pickpockets, no muggings or robberies and as far as you the visitor is concerned, no currency other than the US dollar - not that there is very much to buy anyway. You are, as far as the DPRK is concerned, a guest of the country, which is why you don't pay for anything once you're there - it's all paid in advance before you arrive. The downside of all this is that there is no chance of you belending in or wandering off to take in the sights. The North Koreans know precisely where you are at every minute of your stay - ther's only about a dozen foreign 'guests' in the country at any one time. This picture is the May Day stadium - quite simply awesome!

If you want to buy something...
... do it by yourself, even if your guide is begging for doing it for you. If you allow him, you might be cheated.
For example, as I wanted to buy chopsticks, my guide offered to provide them, for 10 Euros. I bought them in a shop for 3 Euros.
Other example: The guide wanted to take my clothes personally to the hotel laundry - for 18 Euros. The price of the hotel was only 8 Euros.

ask for the price of your drink before you order
When in the bar of a hotel, always check prices of drinks. My first glass of an alcoholic beverage costed me an unexpected 19 euro. The second glass of some comparable fluid was only 2.
