 | Taiwan Off the Beaten Path | Tips 1 - 10 of 100 | | Popular Off the Beaten Path | Other Off the Beaten Path Tips | All Tips (100) This is a place that should not be missed in Taiwan. A small volcanic island that is home to the Yami tribe of aboriginals. It has probably the best preserved of the aboriginal cultures in Taiwan, some of the most striking scenery and definately the best diving. Cant wait to get a chance to get back over this way again.... (Pls see separate Orchid Island page for more...) Located about 60 kilometers off the southeast coast of Taitung. Leave a Comment

You will love this! Many of you might have already tried this, and I'm sure you all love it. One of the TV show here in Taiwan just remind me how lucky I am to be able to teach here in Taiwan. The show is called 5 takes. There are five travellers who were chosen by the TV producers to travel around the world. Everyone of them has a budget of US$50 per day to spend, and they need to take the ideas from locals' recommendation. One of them tried teaching one day. And he said that was the happiest and the best day of his life. So why don't you guys come out here and give it a shot. =D Leave a Comment

Just outside of Taipei nestled in the mountains, one can experience one of the many hotsprings that Taiwan has to offer. The one I visited, and for the life of me I can't remember the name, was situated up in the mountains, outdoors, overlooking endless green valleys and more mountains. If only it weren't so polluted there! Various bath types are available and men and women are separated as nudity is apparently the only option. I found the mud bath to be quite unique! KTV Not kidding , I bet only 1 in every 50 of the visitors who come to Taiwan would ever been to KTV . For me , this is one of my favourite place to hang out with my friends . There are so much fun and so much to do . KTV is a little bit similar with Karaoke . The different thing is you don't have to sing in publicYou can sing in a room where only you and your friends are there . I love that .. as I don't think I can sing in front of someone I don't know :) . Well , you've got to try this , it's very typical Taiwanese fun stuff . I'm sure it's worth a try :) Popular shops: *Cashbox or Holidays Leave a Comment

Lanyu is the ancestral home of the Thao tribe who were well known and feared for their raids on the Taiwanese mainland. The island is volcanic and covered in bush. On arrival at the airport there are likely to be locals on hand to offer you motorcycle rental and cheap accomodation. For an account of my time here check out my Orchid Island travelogue. You can fly to Lanyu from Taitung or take a boat (about 4 hours) Leave a Comment

Chigu is perhaps best known as a stop off on the migratory route of the black faced spoonbill. A local sign in Tainan county points the way to the "Black Faced Spoonbill Preserve" which left me wondering if this was something I could spread on my toast. Also near Chigu is this "salt mountain", which is a popular site for local tourism. These are a few of my students who dragged me out of bed at some ungodly hour on a Sunday to go for a barbecue in the county. My rather pasty complexion probably had something to do with the previous nights entertainment. Chigu is just north of Tainan City on highway 17. Leave a Comment

There are eleven recognized aboriginal tribes in Taiwan who each have their own language and customs. The Taiwanese tribes are though to have occupied the island for about 8,000 years and are related to Malay and Pacific Island people. They have been marginalised somewhat by mainstream Chinese society in Taiwan though there is a bit of a rennaissance going on at present. Sandimen is in Pingtung County Leave a Comment

I know this sounds like a hoax, but with God as my witness, Taiwan does have a place where it is claimed that the water flows uphill... There are two possible explanations for this phenomenom: (1)Either there is a quark in the universe that causes the laws of Sir Issac Newton to be voided in this small corner of the world, or ... (2) There are so many toxic chemicals being dump into the ground water here, that the toxic brew is literally jumping out of the ground... Make the pilgrimage to this remote corner of Taiwan, and please judge for yourself... Located about an hour north of Taitung on the coastal route 11. Leave a Comment

Lintienshan is an old abandoned Japanese logging town in eastern Taiwan. In town, there are many old wooden buildings, narrow alley ways, and abandoned rail road tracks that were once used by the Japanese to support their somewhat successful effort to clear cut all the trees in Taiwan. The town is picturesque, and has an eerie feel to it. The closest thing that I can compare it to is an old ghost town in the US West. Also, it is interesting to see some of the remnants of the old Japanese Empire here in Taiwan. Looking around town, it also appears that effort is being made to restore some of the buildings here. This area deserves some more exploration, as there are also mountain hiking trails, a natural hot spring, and a small mountain lake nearby. (Chitsai Lake) But these side trips will have to wait for another day... Directions: Head south from Hualien on Route 9 until this road intersects with Route 16 (MM 254). Head west for a few kilometers, until this road dead ends into this old logging town. Leave a Comment

Actually we were headed elsewhere when we saw a small sign in Chinese for this place, and decided to give it a try. The locals we met said it was a 15 minute walk and easy to find. Trekking uphill, Joe and I somehow were diverted from the "path", and spend some 30 minutes bush-wacking our way thru a bamboo forest. It was hot, and the jungle was closing in as the trail grew cold. (Trail markers such as discarded chopsticks and Taiwan beer bottles had long since vanished..). Finally, Joe had had enough, and turned on my leadership. After a brief, bloodless coup, Joe emerged as the new lead man. (A fortunate turn of events, as it turned out) With Joe now at the helm, we eventually found the right way, and locate the Sacred Hot Springs. (He earned his Billy-Goat Badge on this day) We returned to base camp as the conquering heroes with the coveted photos of the "hidden springs", though somewhat bruised and battered by the journey... Directions: About half way between Wushe and Lushan on route 14. Turn down scary switch back path on your right. Follow path down to the riverbed and cross small bridge. Walk directly up the jeep path about 50 meters. From there follow the creek upstream for about 30 minutes crossing 2 waterfalls and you will find the first of several small natural hot springs.
