You'll get a flavor of nature and culture that most tourists miss. For instance, these ladies gathered up after morning chores around a fire to shoot the breeze and smoke a cheroot while the men are out in the fields. They are Ka'ren who wear white until they're married (when they wear red). Note the ear-to-ear jewelry on the lady on the left. It's rare to see that ancient way of life up close in the bigger cities, like Chiang Mai. This village was one of the Queen's favorite. She has set it up as a no-development zone - essentially, a government-inspired eco-tourist site. The trek ends up with a couple of other touristy activities that are nonetheless fun - an elephant ride and a rafting trip were a couple of those. I got one MORE activity that's apparently uncommon - the night trek. My guide, our camp host and their friend all donned headlamps and broke out muzzle-loading rifles to go hunting the 2nd night. Our catch? One frog.

Bird Watching in Khoa Sam Roi Yot, National Park.It is in an ideal location for birdwatching. The park, the freshwater marsh 15 km.to the north, and the long beach. We added 32 birds to our list just in that area. Common, collared,white-throated, and black-capped kingfishers are beautiful and quite numerous. In the marsh we saw the purple and the grey heron. Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Bronze-winged Jacana,Black-winged Stilt, and Purple swamphen to name just afew. The Khao Daeng Canal boat trip is very relaxing also. Beautiful mountain vistas, birds among the mangroves, and monkeys in the trees. Leave a Comment

We drove around and finally found the sign that said Nosey Parker's Elephant Park. They brought in two elephants and put seats on their backs, while we waited. We climbed up the stairs to reach their height and got on. Each had a driver and they took us down a stream, across a field and back. What fun. After we got off we got to feed them bananas. North of Krabi is Wat Tham Sua, named after a rock formation that resembles a tigers paw. There is a 985 ft staircase that leads to the top. When you get to the top of the 1237 steps, there is a large Buddha image on top of the cliff and some fantatic views. Leave a Comment Other Contact: Krabi

One thing to pay attention on are leeches, snakes and eliphants. We encountered several snakes for example at Doi Inthanon, Khao Nur Chuchi during our stay, and you better count on them! Leeches where a problem in several parts in Khao Nur chuchi, in the more wetter parts of the rainforest! Eliphants we almost ran into a group of these wonderfull animals late at night at Khao Yai, and if the brakes where not that good we hade a large problem! Leave a Comment

Inside the Wat Tham Ma Rong you can find the Nam Thip caves. There is no entrance fee but you should pay for the (colourful) light (20 Baht). When we arrived at the sign "Ask here for light", nobody was there. After waiting a while and looking around we donated the 20 Baht into the wooden box and switched on the light for the caves ourselves. (Note: This could be tricky since you can never be sure whether you switch the light ON or OFF. If there are already people inside ...) Ask the locals how to get there (e.g. Tu and Sepp from the Ban Hat Ressort in Ban Krut) Leave a Comment

The sandstone formations, caves and water pools here are worth seeing. Some of the cave paintings are 6000 years old. You can get a half day tour out of Tim's Guest House in Si Chiang Mai. In Mar 02, it was 450 baht for the car and guide for four people. The site is actually closer (12 km) to the "other" Ban Phu, i.e., not the one near Ban Chiang. There is a nice visitors center with displays. It is also where you pay the park entrance fee (30 baht for foreigners). See also my Northeast Thailand travelogue on the Si Chiang Mai Area. Empty Beaches, almost no tourism, nice and helpful locals. Nice sights around: Huai Yang National Park, Bo Thong Lang bay, Wat Tham Ma Rong with its cave Nam Thip, numerous plantations, and a very modern Wat (mixed Thai-Indian-European (!) style) with a huge Buddha (photo - for size comparison: on the left side you can see my boyfriend) Ban Had Ressort - nice Bungalows (300 Baht/day) underneath coconut palms; drank some chinese alcohol with the owners of the ressort Tu & Sepp @:-) Directions: South of Prachuap Khiri Khan Leave a Comment

Stay at Tim's Guest House in Si Chiang Mai (130 baht with fan) on the Mae Khong river across from Vientiane, Laos. Daniel and Noy will organize riverboat trips or local tours for you. The sunset boat ride on the Mekong River is 50 baht per person. The food at the guest house is quite good and reasonably priced. In the morning market you can find delicious spring rolls and fresh French bread made by Vietnamese expatriates.
