Alice springs is an excellent town to spend 3 or 4 days while you are "on the road" through central Australia. There is so much to do here that your days can be spent looking through the mulititude of gorges and valleys, visiting the desert park or casino, shopping or simply using the Alice as a base to visit either Uluru or Kings Canyon.
The web site below is very informative and will help you plan your stay.

An easy short (15 minutes return) self guided walk commences from the carpark on the western side of the road and there are plenty of signs explaining the formation of the 'marbles'. You can wander around the site along a network of informal walking tracks.

    Please remember.....

All cultural items and wildlife are protected.
Pets are permitted on a leash, in the carpark only.

    Adelaide River Jumping crocodiles 4.
  • Tip Rating:
  • And after the crocodiles have put on their show and jumped for the chickens that the crew have suspended on poles a few metres above the water level, they slip silently into the water and we can see straight down their throats from a much safer height than the croc wishes we had!

And the view is pretty spectacular as well! When you have walked to the top and enjoyed your swim in the top pool, you can enjoy an easy walk back down and experience the magnificent views that this part of the Northern Territory has to offer....and it is free!

    Please remember....

All native plants and animals in the Park are protected and please respect Aboriginal art sites, do not touch the paintings.
Please take all of your litter with you and dispose of it properly. Pets are not permitted in the Park.

As you can imagine, it is quite an uneasy feeling as you are floating on the river in the middle of nowhere and you have around 20 or 30 hungry crocodiles swimming from the banks toward the boat that you are standing on! All part of the show really but when you are being watched all the time by these large predators you begin to imagine them licking their lips below the waterline!

Believe it or not Ayres Rock (ULURU) sits right in the middle of a flood plain and when it rains the rock is transformed into an amazing place. Waterfalls are seen all over this massive monolith and the water forms huge freshwater pools around its base. I found it interesting that most people retreated to the comfort of the resort but Anne and I were taken with the beauty of the occasion and we walked around the base of the rock, all 9.5 km's of it, in the pouring rain!

Jim Jim Falls and Arnhem escarpment scenic flight.
  • Tip Rating:
  • From the township of Jabiru, scenic flights are offered that offer spectacular Arnhemland Escarpment views and fly over most of the attractions, including Jim Jim Falls. The falls do not flow throughout the dry season, but if there has been a reasonable wet season they will still be running up until late August. The gorges through which they flow are a spectacle to behold as the rock colours continuously change with the suns position.
Jim Jim has a drop of 215 metres and has a sand fringed pool for year round swimming. The falls are also accessed via a 4wd track of around 70 km's in length.

Ormiston Gorge is one of the most spectacular of the gorges in the MacDonnell Ranges. Situated on the road to Glen Helen Gorge, access is easy and there is a visitor centre/kiosk available.
Within the gorge is a permanent waterhole, estimated to be at least 14 metres deep, which provides a refreshing finale to a day's exploring. The 7 kilometre long Ormiston Pound walk is a full circuit from the visitor centre across the gentle slopes, onto the flat floor of the pound and returns along the gorge via the main waterhole.

    the spring.

The Douglas hot springs are a natural waterway which can often contain very hot water. Swimming is best suited to the cooler pools some 200 metres upstream and downstream from the main pool.
The most comfortable time to visit is in the dry season (May - September). Heavy rains during the wet season (October - April) may cause road closures.
The Park is an important place for Aboriginal women's business ceremonies and the Wagiman women retain the right to close the park should they wish to carry out ceremonies on their land. The Wagiman women manage the park with the Parks and Wildlife Commission.

Alice Springs - The Henley on Todd Regatta.
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Henley on Todd Regatta is a day you should not miss if your holiday in the centre co-incides with the date. Where else in the world would you find a boat race, on a dry river bed and over 1500 km's from the nearest ocean?
The key-note of the Regatta is hilarity, and this is achieved by the nature of the events. Among the most popular is the ' Surf-Ski Rescue', in which rail tracks are laid along the river-bed and the 'damsels-in-distress'; take their positions at the opposite end of the rails from their 'rescuers'. When the starters gun goes off the lifesavers have to paddle their flat-top, surf skis along the rails, rescue the damsel, and be hauled back to the start on their safety line by the 'beach-based' assistants. The rails are also used in the 'Oxford Tubs', an event in which pairs sit in a half 44 gallon drum and paddle it along with small shovels.
The 'eights', 'yachts', Head of River, Bring your own Vessel, Hens Head of the River, Ladies Cutter, High School Chick of the Todd and the coveted Admiral's Cup are all team events run in boats with or without sails, but having no bottom or top. Contestants stand inside their vessels holding them waist high and, at the sound of the starters gun, race along the course-hopefully without tripping over each other or collapsing from laughter or exhaustion. Great encouragement from the spectators urges the teams through the heavy sand and there is rarely a race where at least one team doesn't collapse into the sand in a jumble of arms and legs.
Other events on the fast-moving day include the Henley Bathing Beauty contest, the Iron Sandman, the Greasy-mast, and sand-shovelling.
The grand finale to a mad-cap day is a Naval battle. Vessels armed with water-cannons, flour bombs and 'blood thirsty' pirates engage in 'mortal combat'.
