Lennox Head
  • Tip Rating:
  • Lake Ainsworth's water - Byron Bay
    Lake Ainsworth's water

Lennox Head is situated at about the mid-way point between Byron Bay and Ballina, about 5km south of Byron. It is basically a small seaside village but one that boasts some pretty spectacular beaches. I have to admit that Lennox Head Pub is also worth a look :)

Lennox Head's beaches definitely rival Byron's especially when Byron's seem to be full of tourists. Another unique feature of Lennox is Lake Ainsworth. This is a fresh water lake whose water has been stained by all the tea trees that surround it. The water has the appearance of Coca Cola in my opinion and is excellent for your hair and skin and a nice change from the salt water beaches. It is also an excellent place for a variety of water sports including windsurfing. Lennox Point is another highlight which offers hangliding.

Mt Warning and the Burringbar Range form an impressive backdrop to the North-West skyline when you look out across Byron Bay. A climb up Mt Warning makes an impressive day trip out of Byron Bay and one I would strongly recommend! Access to Mt Warning is via the town of Mullumbimby about 25 minutes North of Byron on the Pacific Highway. From Mullum' you then enter the Mt Warning National Park and drive to the foot of the mountain where you can park your car.

The walk up takes about 5 hours return and the final part involves a small section where you must hold onto chains to climb the rocky summit. The rest of the walk is through stunning littoral rainforest enjoying the abundance of wildlife from 'scrub trukeys' to lyrebirds, green catbirds (yes, that's right CATbirds - when you hear their call you will understand that one!) and the occasional wallaby.

At the summit you are rewarded with stunning views out towards Northern NSW - Byron Bay, Lennox Head, West towards the fertile hills around Casino and Lismore and North along the coast to the Queensland Border and beyond to the touristy Gold Coast.

Make sure you take plenty of water and let somebody know where you are going and when you plan to return. Also in winter ensure that you do not push on to the summit if it is past 12 noon as the eastern slopes can get quite dark if you return after sunset or even in the mid afternoon.

A day-trip that I stongly recommend to anyone who enjoys walking and seeing Australia's great outdoors!

TeeHee..... I asked Dad if we could stop the car for a photo so he stopped in this bend, I was hoping for somewhere where we could pull-off the road. Anyway, we take the photo and then 5 minutes later a HUGE semi-trailer comes hurtling past...hmmm, I think we'll be a bit more choosy about photo stops next time!!!

Ballina is about 34km from Byron and a beautiful town to visit. It's beaches are incredible. The fact that the town is about double the size of Byron it offers more amenities. Shelley Beach and Shelley Beach Cafe should be a 'must-see' for any traveller. I recommend the banana and coconut cheescake at the Cafe. The Ballina River offers a number of possibilities for water sports and is my Dad's favourite fishing destination. Shaw's Bay is great for kids and the barbecues situated there make for a fantastic and affordable day out for families. A walk along the break wall is awesome as you watch the surfers to your left and the fishing trawlers going out to sea from your right. Very nice spot and only about 2.5 hours from Brisbane.

    Lazy Lennox Head
  • Tip Rating:
  • Lennox Head is a relaxed little town just south of Byron, about 15 mins drive. I used to spend every Easter there with my family. We always stayed in the only campground in the town, which surrounds the beautiful Lake Ainsworth. You can go for a swim in the ocean across the road then on the way back to your tent/caravan, have a dip in the lake! This is a great place for kids, we used to love it. Lake Ainsworth, with its tea-tree-coloured water, is also great for wind surfing and catamaran sailing.

The surfers know Lennox for its famous right hand point break, and the hang-gliders love the place for the sensational views when they take off from Pat Morton Lookout.

Accommodation in Lennox includes motels, caravan park, holiday flats, backpacker hostel and a rapidly expanding range of apartments and resort style complexes.

If you go to Lennox make sure to stop off at one of the best located pubs in Australia, the Lennox Pub. Directly opposite the beach, the pub will always assure you of a warm welcome, a refreshing beverage and a great meal.

I have been back there recently, and although it has changed alot, it is still much more peaceful than its bustling neighbour towns of Ballina and Byron Bay.

    Nimbin - west of Byron
  • Tip Rating:
  • Nimbin is Australia's drug capital and home of the alternative lifestyle. We lived out there on a community a while ago and had a lovely time, but it was a bit too far away from the beach and shops for me lol :o)

At nightfall walk down to the ocean and take in the sunset. After the sun has set sit and watch the ocean, and if you are lucky enough you might see the sea urchins light up the ocean waves. (There needs to be no moon, or very little light from the moon) As the waves roll over, the sea urchins come alive emitting electric blue/green colours that can be seen in the waves. Definitely one of the most amazing things I have ever seen!

    Mingan Falls
I believe that many tours that are taking people to Nimbin stop here but at the top of the waterfalls. Me and my travel companions hiked to the bottom instead. A nice little hike through bushes and ferns... make shure to check your legs afterwards!

    Arakwal National Park
The 183-hectare park stretches from the lighthouse reserve on Australia's most easterly point south along Tallow Beach for nearly two kilometres. Its creation is the result of the first indigenous land use agreement in Australia to provide for such a park.

Cape Byron Headland stands on the most easterly point of the Australian mainland. A spectacular clifftop walking track offers panoramic views of the ocean and north coast hinterland. An outstanding vantage point for viewing a diverse range of marine life, including turtles, dolphins and the humpback whales on their annual migration.

It's 2 km east of Byron Bay, along Lighthouse Road.

Undoubtedly Byron is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Great weather, fantastic fishing, unbeatable surf, awesome beaches not to mention the surrounding hinterland. But to enjoy these things you have get outside the main part of Byron. The photo of me is taken on a beach near Broken Head which is about a 15 minute drive out of the town of Byron Bay and as you can see there is not a person in sight...absolutety perfect for those romantic days on a beach with that girl/guy you just met at the hostel!

    Visit the Byron Bay Lighthouse
Well having only visited here once and sort of like a stop over for snack and bathroom stop, I really only have photos from a distance of the famous Byron Bay Lighthouse.

None the less I am proud to show them to you knowing that next trip through I will get the close ups too. Byron Bay lighthouse is famous because it is on the most easterly point of Australias coastline.
