 | Dubbo Things To Do | Tips 1 - 10 of 16 | | Popular Things To Do | Other Things To Do Tips | All Tips (16) The biggest advantage to going to the Dubbo Observatory to do a bit of stargazing as opposed to our Observatory up from the Rocks in Sydney is that our here in the country you don't have the competition from all those bright city lights. Yes the lovely dark sky allows all those amazing stars, constellations, galaxies etc shine all the more brightly & be so clearly visible. A great educational experience for all ages & quite frankly I think that quite often we adults get a lot more out of it than our kids do. Unless of course the kids happen to be really into it anyway. Ours aren't, don't think they're old enough yet, but quite enjoyed it nevertheless. Another worhtwhile activity to add to your planned Dubbo trip that I would recommend. Please keep in mind though, that bookings for this are essential. Ring on the number given below. This is the main must see in Dubbo even though I've already stated there is a lot more to see. It is widely recognised as Australia's best open range zoo. This is why we did the big trek from the old Knee of Syd (get it = Sydney), so our girls could see the Western Plains Zoo which sure has really changed for the better since I last visited it. We did the Early Morning Walk with one of the many volunteer guides who do this extremely important job & we got a beauty. Maureen Jarvis was our guide & was great with everyone, being especially patient with our twin girls & there 5 year old friend. This required us to be there between 6.30 & 6.45 a.m., not that long after the sun had peeked over the horizon. It was definitely worth the early start to go some places one normally doesn't get to visit &U get up close to some of those interesting animals. For the 4 of us, 2 adults & 2 5 year old girls it cost $95 (Australian) entry which included our EMW plus a whole day at the zoo. It is available every Saturday & Sunday year round, every Wednesday & Friday during schoolo holidays & also on NSW Public Holidays with the exception being Xmas Day. No booking is required & it costs $10 per adult & $5 per child (plus normal entry fee). You can also get a breakfast at the end of your just over 2 hour walk which we did & really enjoyed. Took me two goes to find this place, but it was quite worth it when I did. It's an average sized gallery fairly typical of the size you might find throught regional New South Wales. Don't know if this has been done intentionally or not, but is is specialising in the theme, "animals in art" & because I had only a briefish visit as mum was elsewhere trying to keep the girls occupied & they were a bit tired & emotional so I knew I'd best not dessert her for too long, I didn;t get to ask anyone if this was a temporary or permanent exhibition. What I do know was that there were some very good quality artworks on display & if you are heading out to Dubbo then I would recommend adding a visit here to your planned itinerary. It's opened from Tuesday to Sunday (inclusive) between the hours of 11 a.m. & 4.30 p.m. It has a gallery shop with an interesting range of cards & gifts. Leave a Comment Phone: 02 6881 4342Directions: If you go out there in the not too distant future then DON'T go to Darling St as advised in the brochures available. It is now in the Dubbo Regional Library which is just about at the end of the main shopping street.Other Contact: gallery@dubbo.nsw.gov.au

DUBBO'S MAGNIFICENT WESTERN PLAINS ZOO Just as I've seen the town grow at different stages I've also seen the Zoo grow from an ungainly young thing to now a magnificent adult and who knows how much better it may get in the future. Never been a "zoo" type of person, but at this stage of my life I now understand & appreciate the work they can do in showing the world many endangered species & highlighting our need, all of us, to try to do something about conserving these endangered species. In 1986 the Western Plains Zoo was the first Australasian zoo to successfully breed the Cheetah, an endangered species. It is committed to many conservation for endangered Australian species such as the Greater Bibly ( if you're in Australia around Easter buy a chcolate Bilby rather than a choclate egg or bunny), Malleefowl & Bridled Nailtail Wallaby. Enough moralising about that what about the Zoo itself. I like the way it advertises itself as an opportunity to go on a world safari in just one day. You can take your world safari by car or on foot. You can bring your own bicycles or hire/rent a variety of different bicycles there. Also, for those with mobility issues electric cars can be hired/rented that seat about 4 people. The 300 hectares of grass & woodland is divided into different regions of the world with a selection of animals from this region. My favourite is always the African section with the rhinos, giraffes & simian apes as my favourites within that section. Still it depends what you like & you'd be mad to miss even a bit of it! DUBBO - MINOKAMO SISTER CITY GARDEN Not really just for the gradeners amongst you, but for anyone who enjoys a bit of tranquility & you just may need this the day after you've had such a hectic day at the magnificent Western Plains Zoo. Not only does it have a lovely Japanese Garden that will only get better and better with time, but there is also a Ceremonial Tea House as well to help you really appreciate the experience in a total way. You can visit this little oasis of calmness 7 days a week except for Christmas Day & New Year's Day when it's closed. Weekdays it is open from 9 a.m till 4 p.m & on the weekends from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. Leave a Comment Address: Elizabeth Park, Coronation Drive, East DubboPhone: 02 6881 4303 (Dubbo Council)Directions: It's about5 minutes drive ot of town back towards Sydney and you turn left off the Mitchell Highway into Windsor Parade, turn right into Coronation Drive & it's just up on your left.

For us Aussies growing up on a diet (I don't mean that literally. lol!) of our furry mammals like kangaroos, koalas, wombats, wallabies etc we always have that craving to see the more exoitc creatures, especially, for me at least, the African ones. Well, despite Taronga Park Zoo in Sydney having views of the city that are really stunning & it is an absloutely beautiful Zoo, I think Western Plains Zoo at Dubbo allows you to see the animals in a much more natural environment. Check the website below for current prices & packages. Leave a Comment Address: Obley Road, DubboPhone: 02 6882 5888Directions: Follow the signs. After all, it's the town's number 1 tourist attraction.Website: www.zoo.nsw.gov.au

The Western Plains Zoo, in Dubbo is the largest open-range Zoo in Australia. The animals wander freely in open spaces made to resemble their natural habitats. There are a series of concealed moats with special wire which keep visitors safe while still giving them the impression that they are in the wild with the animals. Leave a Comment Directions: Dubbo

Dubbo is a great city to visit. There are many things of interest to see here, and lots of activities to do as well. You would need at least a couple of days to fully appreciate what this region has to offer. Leave a Comment Address: Dubbo-and surrounding region
