 | Newcastle Restaurants | Tips 1 - 10 of 48 | | Popular Restaurants | Other Restaurants Tips | All Tips (48) For me it was special as it was one of the few opened when I was looking for a cafe around 5:30 p.m. Luckily I chose this place & encountered good Aussie friendly service with a good value early dinner & a nice cup of coffee.
It was early & I wanted something not too heavy before I drove back to Sydney. Looking at the range of Gourmet Sandwiches & Light Meals availabe as well as Pies & Pastries, I eventually settled on the "Pumpkin & Spinach pie with salad & Garlic Bread" for a mere $8 (Australian). Accompanying this was my usual Mocha Coffee, on this occasion not only providing the flavour I enjoy, but also the caffeine necessary to keep me alert on the drive back home. All in all, good value tucker & quite nice coffee so I was a happy customer. Again it's great to also be able to recommend this place because of the good Aussie friendly service by owner/manager David Tape & his staff. The ambience here overlooking the Pacific Ocean, eating lovely food while enjoying the view, preferably with the right company has to be a close to perfect experience. Well I didn't quite get that as I was on the work trip unaccompanied by any loved ones, but I could still imagine how it could have been. It still was a very enjoyable dining experience all the same. For the drier info, you can dine here 7 days and nights a week. I also enjoyed the extensive buffet breakfast to start my work day.
Those of you who've read a few of my food tips know how much I enjoy my Omega 3 oils so when I saw "Atlantic Salmon with roasted sweet potato & aspargus & lemon butter sauce" on the menu (at $29.50 Australian) my choice was determined immediately. A side order of Greek Salad (at $6.50) complemented it nicely. And no, neither dessert or a mocha coffee to finish off with. See, I can surprise you sometimes. lol! If you're in Newcastle with someone special enjoy a meal here. The story of 'Harry's Cafe de Wheels' goes back to the Depression years of the late 1930's. With the world on the brink of a devastating war, an enterprising Sydneysider by the name of Harry (Tiger) Edwards opened a caravan cafe near the front gates of the Wooloomooloo naval dockyard. For a while it looked like the venture would become an early casualty of the war when Harry closed down and went to the Middle East with the AIF. But, on his discharge in 1945, Harry went back into business - realising that Sydney hadn't changed much and it was still almost impossible to get a good feed late - night. Word spread quickly with Harry's 'pies and peas' and crumbed sausages soon becoming a popular part of the city's nightlife - keenly sought by sailors, soldiers, cabbies, starlets and coppers alike. The name 'Cafe de Wheels' came about as the city council of the day insisted that mobile food caravans move a minimum of 12 inches a day. Harry dutifully obeyed. Before the councils ruling, the caravan was known simply as 'Harry's'. When its wheels went missing one night, local wags coined the nickname 'Cafe de Axle'. As the years passed, 'Harry's Cafe de Wheels' gained new fame as a tourist attraction. A visit to the caravan became a 'must' for visiting celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, Robert Mitchum and Marelene Dietrich. In 1974, chicken king, Colonel Sanders, stopped at Harry's and enjoyed the food so much that he ate three 'pies and peas' while leaning on his walking stick in front of the caravan. Harry's is now in Newcastle along the foreshore and is a place not to be missed. Beaumont St, Hamilton is the place to go for breakfast, lunch, dinner or a great coffee. A wide range of dining is available from around the world. A few favourites are Aloi Thai - for great Thai food, Banyan Tree for Indonesian and The New Rickshaw Inn for Chinese Leave a Comment

The Darby St precinct is an extremely popular destination for dining experiences from Brunch to a great evening out. There are about 50 restaurants in this street and it is busy at all hours of the day. Usually you'll see the yuppies cruising the street also, as shown with the Merc in the photo. Leave a Comment

Customs House is a beautiful old building in East Newcastle near the water. It is a restaurant, bar and function centre. The food is delicious and atmosphere is excellent. On a sunny day, sitting outside under an umbrella is superb. Leave a Comment

The view. What we're talking about here is a sweeping landscape through a sculpture park completed by the serene waters of Lake Macquarie, Australia's largest seaboard lake. The pleasant staff seem to be afflicted by the tranquil setting and a relaxed atmosphere is guaranteed, even if they're busy, particularly on weekends.
We loved the soup but, since it is a soup de jour, you may not get the same as us. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Lake Macquarie Art Gallery, BooragulDirections: South west of Newcastle City, approx 15 kms

In the space of a few blocks in a street of an inner suburb of Newcastle you can taste Indian, African, Italian, Turkish, Greek, Irish, Lebanese, Chinese, Thai, South American and others I've undoubtedly forgotten.
How many dishes!!!! If only I could remember them all. Veal Neptune from Cafe de Beaumont would rank highly but that's just one of hundreds to be found among the over 50 restaurants that line this street, so thick that every second shop front is a house full of epicurean delights. Take your time, this is slow food heaven and I visit there at least once a month and really can't remember having a bad meal though some weren't as good as others. Probably the Indian restaurant that is upstairs on one of the corners wouldn't rate highly but another just down the street where I haven't eaten is always packed. So, go enjoy yourself - bon appetit! Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Beaumont Street, HamiltonDirections: Inner suburb of Newcastle
