 | Kangaroo Island General Tips | Tips 1 - 5 of 5 | | Popular General Tips | Other General Tips Tips | All Tips (5) Frenchman's Rock was one of my favorite spots on Kangaroo Island, because even at age 17, I was well on my way to being a fan of France, and this point commemmorates the meeting at Kangaroo Island between explorers Baudin and englishman Flinders on their respective missions of exploration, in 1801. It was a cordial encounter between the two on board one of the vessells, even though officially Britain and France were still at war. Leave a Comment

This was one of my favorite views of Kangaroo Island (nicely framed, as I do love taking photos of things through archways and doorways). Leave a Comment

One of my fondest memories of Kangaroo Island is visiting a house called "Paul's Place" where the owner takes in all kinds of animals, native and domestic, and they all practically share his semi-built house (which should be finished by now if he's still there!) and his yard. He had a real love of nature and animals. Leave a Comment

Kangaroo Island is fantastic to explore, but it is a bigger island than many people imagine. I think the best way to see the island is with a local who knows their way around, or a tour group that takes a little longer to really see the cool and out of the way things on the island. (Campwild Adventures does an excellent combination of the two) Leave a Comment

One thing about Kangaroo Island I found interesting was that the insects were different from the mainland. The main insect at the place I stayed at in Penneshaw was probably filling the evolutionary niche of the cockroach (see picture). There were beetles that from the top looked like a oval upturned leaf, and at Cape Gantheume Wilderness Protection Area a christmas-beetle coloured variety of fly. There were weeds which smelled like burning rubber if disturbed, and ones which grow a few meters high if left alone (see picture). Animals that aren't unique to Kangaroo Island but are uncommon elsewhere in the region are Wallabies, Penguins, Echidnas, Sea Lions and Platypus. Leave a Comment
