Popular Transportation | Other Transportation Tips | All Tips (8) Once you arrive in Ballarat, if you haven't your own transport, hiring a car or catching the bus are your options. If you want a taxi, you'll find them on the Myer building corner (Cnr Armstrong & Sturt Sts)
You'll also find the closest bus stop to the Railway Station here.
If you are staying very centrally, like Lydiard Street or Armstrong street, you can do most of your city sightseeing on foot and only need the bus for trips ie to the Lake or Wildlife Park or Sovereign Hill. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

January 2006: The new Vlocity trains have just commenced running, with some time savings on the Ballt- Melb journey, but the fast train timetable won't be up and running for a few more months yet, we're told.
Part timetable (start 23 jan 2006) :
Ballarat - Melbourne, Monday - Friday:

From Melb - Ballarat, Mon - Fri:

Train and busses leaves Melbourne for Ballarat from Flinders Street Station daily, and vice versa. Traveling time approximately 1hr 45mins. Services are also available from regional Victoria.

Notice also the dark sky. You might think it was a rainy day, but it was not. The temperature that day was 47° C (116° F)!!! The reason of this dark sky was a big bush fire that morning in the area of Melbourne. Lucky for us it was clearing up by midday. Theme: Train

Ballarat is within driving distance of Melbourne, and this is probably your best choice of transportation. If you are going to Soverign Hill or downtown Ballarat, you will want the freedom to stay as long or as little as you like at either.
Simply take the Western Highway out of Melbourne toward South Australia, and you can not miss it! Leave a Comment

Ballarat is about 110km (68 miles) from Melbourne via the Western Freeway, about 1 hr 15 mins drive. There are also trains (which take around 1 ½ hrs one way) which leave from Melbourne and a number of tour companies operate coaches there daily as well. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Here is a town that has a rail service that can actually get to Melbourne faster than a car. Amazing. One day Australian railways may all be like that but, sadlly, I won't be alive to see it. Still, let us rejoice that at least here the dream still lives.
Yes, in just over and hour you can be in the big smoke or, those tourists stuck in Melbourne can get here in comfort.
Inside the historic station there is an unusual overhead bridge, the like of which I've not seen anywhere else.

You can take a coach tour around the streets and visit the blacksmiths where you will see the horses being shoed and also at work around the diggings. One of the largest collection of working horse in the world. You will be able to see the Clydesdales, Percheron and Perchoron cross breeds. Leave a Comment Theme: Other
