  • A great place to eat...a great cellar door...and good wines...but the museum? ...stole the show. This is an art museum with modern art...and changing displays. It overlooks the yarra valley...and honestly...you could spend hours on this campus. We were not that crazy about using any time away from tasting wines...but it well worth it...and I'm so glad we stopped.

  • A great place to stop for a quick bite to eat...or a little cheese platter...or ice cream. This is a great shop with pasta, some of the best cheeses...little boutique wines...and ice cream. They even have a place for the kids to watch the cows be milked.

    If you get a chance...buy some peppered pasta....excellent!!

    Aside from Healesville Sanctuary, the most popular thing to do in Healesville is to visit the wineries. There are literally hundreds in the Yarra Valley, with the biggest ones being Rochford (see separate tip), Yering Station, Domain Chandon (the 'sister' winery to Moet & Chandon) and St Hubert's. There are plenty of pretty boutique wineries as well, my favourite being Roundstone.

  • Directions: From Lilydale, head along the Melba or Maroondah Highway towards Yarra Glen or Healesville. You will pass plenty or wineries along the way - take your pick!

  • Bar none...the BEST wine in the valley...or at least what we've tasted so far.

    Bill just happened to recognise the label from one of the bottles at healesville hotel..as it was one of the most expensive...and saw this close to Coldstream Hills. He doesn't advertise...he's not the map...it was a fluke that we stopped there for our last stop.

    The Dr of botany who runs the vineyards was one of the first...and has been doing this for 38 years. The second you walk into his cellar door and meet him...you KNOW you've walked into the presence of a legend. It's only $5 for his tastings...and his wines start at $65...but they should be much more. You definitely get what you pay for...and this is no exception. I can't even tell you which of the wines were our favorites...but we walked out with a handful...even with a fortified. THIS IS A MUST SEE!...and a MUST DRINK!

  • Bendigo wines have become some of our favorite aussie wines since we've moved here...so we were happy to see Balgownie come to the Yarra.

    The accomodations are the newest in the area...

    HEALESVILLE WILDLIFE SANCTUARY...Less than an hours drive out of Melbourne is this marvellous wildlife Sanctuary with over 200 species and is a great place to view your favourite Aussie wildlife..it is open every day of the year and is in a truly great bush setting that makes it so enjoyable and natural..you can get up really close to wildlife..great photo opportunities...staff are really helpful..
    This sanctuary is serviced by most major day tour companies..

    Healesville Sanctuary's Birds of Prey Presentation was launched over ten years ago and since then has become one of the Sanctuary's 'must do' experiences. The presentation takes place in a beautiful outdoor amphitheatre creating an intimate, natural space for an unforgettable encounter with Australia's amazing birds of prey. A 20-minute presentation in which up to 5 birds of prey are flown - imagine the feeling of a wedge-tailed eagle flying only inches above your head! Other birds you may meet include the buzzard, kite, peregrine falcon, osprey and the owls. Presentations are held every day at 12 noon and 2.30pm - don't miss it.
