Cash for pics - please!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Take as many pics as you like of the friendly locals – for a price!

They can be found anywhere that the tourists are – a photo opportunity on every corner! These happy ladies were ever ready to pose for the camera, but naturally they ALL wanted an obligatory dollar for their efforts! Keep lots of single notes handy!

    Grand Anse Beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • A 10 minute drive from the capital of St Georges, Grand Anse Beach is fabulous, but don't expect a quiet and peaceful time! Apart from being very popular with holidaymakers, beach vendors are rife here - all very friendly but at the rate of 1 every 3 minutes it gets somewhat annoying. There are only so many banana leaf hats and packets of spice that anyone can really need or use in a lifetime!!

A handy water taxi will take you the short ride back to the harbour if you have a cruise ship to catch!

When we visited Grenada, it had been 6 months since Hurricane Ivan devastated the island.

Apparently 98% of the locals homes suffered some form of damage. Many are still without roofs. The people are gradually getting the repairs made, but resources are low due to the demand – repairs are vital before the wet weather sets in and creates more problems.

Seeing this for yourself certainly makes you realise how frightening it must have been to endure. Our local guide told us how his family took cover within their home for over 8 hours while the hurricane raged around them.

    The Saturday Market
  • Tip Rating:
  • Every Saturday morning there is a wonderfully colourful market in the heart of St. George's. It's where the locals do most of their shopping. There is every type of Caribbean fruit and vegetable, including bananas, coconuts, watermelons, breadfruit and plantains. You can also buy craft products, such as straw hats, baskets and rag dolls.

    The Carenage
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Carenage is the name of St. George's harbour and it's the prettiest harbour in the Caribbean.

It's used by cruise ships, fishing boats and the ferries to the neighbouring island of Carriacou.

There are some nice cafes and restaurants on the waterfront.

    Fort George
  • Tip Rating:
  • Fort George is located on the hill overlooking St George's just a short walk from the town. It was built by the French in the 18th century to protect the harbour, and changed hands between the French and the British several times before the island was ceded to the British in 1783. All around the Fort are a number of tunnels which soldiers used to use to store ammunition. More recently, the Fort was the focus for a coup, with the Prime Minister and 15 colleagues losing their lives there in October 1983. A plaque commemorates their names, and the bullet holes can still be seen - islanders requested that they not be filled in as a memory of the horrors of that day.

There isn't much information about the history of the Fort on site, so I would suggest that you pick up a leaflet or guide at the tourist information centre on the Carenage.

The Fort is now the main police headquarters.

The capital of Grenada is Saint George's, a rather small city on the south west side of the island. Quite lively, since it's a common stop for american cruise ships. Which also makes the city a bit more touristy than other smaller cities in the area.

In the city center there is a market place, full with spicies, plus all the t-shirts for tourists. Didn't find anything nice there, but it was probably more because I was a bit shocked from the rush than about what was on sell on the market.

At the side of it was a very nice bar, called "North Pole". I'm sure it wasn't as cold as at the real north pole there...

The bay and marina is full of live and big and smaller boats. Read more on my Saint George's page.

The coolest thing was the church without a roof in the middle of the city. Not 100 per cent sure, but I heard that the roof got lost in one of the hurricanes.

A walk in the rain forest
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the middle of Grenada you'll find the national park Grand Etang Rain Forest, which includes both a volcano and a rain forest.
The rain forest contains a couple of paths, which takes about 15-45 minutes to walk, depending on where you choose to go. The first one led us up to a nice view point, from where we could see all the way down to the coast, all over the rain forest.
Make sure to get there when the weather is clear though, as it first was very cloudy and foggy, and couldn't see even 50 meters away.
But very quickly, nice enough, the clouds took off, and in just a few minutes we had clear view all the way down to the ocean.

It's a nice walk, although a lot of ups and downs, so make sure you're in at least a descent shape before you take off. The ground is also quite wet, so don't use your nicest party shoes... ;)

The rain forest is probably best known for it's monkeys, although we were told that it wasn't sure that they were in the park when we got there. We took the walk anyway (costed 2 US dollar (5 EC) to enter), but didn't see any monkeys. When we got back we were told they had passed right in front of our taxi while we were out hiking...

    Damn...

Take a bath in the Annandale Falls
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of our first days we booked a taxi van and took a round trip around the island. One of the nicest things we saw was the Annandale Falls, about 20 minutes drive from Saint George's.

The way up there is very much up&down, and the view is part of the time great! But if you're afraid of heights you should probably close your eyes on those parts... :)

The car stops right at the side of the road, and a friendly guide takes you down to the fall, while telling you about the nature, almost rain forest around.
Have to say that for us northern europeans it was quite exotic to see a banana tree out in the wild. :D

The fall is quite small, but still impressing. Down there they have built a pool, and there are steps built up so you can both go down to the bottom, and swim in the pool. Very nice and warm water, although you should be a bit careful when stepping in so you don't slip on the rocks. At the end of the pool is the falls, and I have to say it was a nice feeling to swim into it, and then stand behind it and look out.

A 20 minutes trip, then it's not that fun to swim around there anymore.

Right before the you'll most probably find a guy who says he will dive down from the falls into the pool for money. It's up to you if you want to see him do that/pay him, but the guide warned us for him and said we should ignore him as it was nothing special.

Have to say that I prefered swimming around myself instead of seeing someone else jump down.

The swimming, falls and guiding is free, but the guide will be happy for some tip. Think it was worth it, definitely.

  • There are several rum distilleries in Grenada, but River Antoine is the oldest and it makes the strongest rum.

The distillery has been producing 150 degree proof Rivers Rum since 1785. it uses the oldest working water mill in the Caribbean to crush the sugar cane.
