Next to the Franciscan Monastery on the western side of the old town is Onofrio’s Large Fountain, erected in 1440. The original fountain had a waterworks display that was impressive. Another casualty of the 1667 earthquake, it lost most of its original functionality, although clear river water still flows from the fountain today.

Just across from St. Saviour's and the Franciscan monastery complex is this giant fountain. It is located at the entrance to the city just inside the Pile Gate for good reason, as it was a requirement for visitors to the city to wash here before gaining entrance in order to avoid the spread of the plague.

The fountain is basically a big stone circle topped by a dome with ornate heads sprouting from its surface and spewing water into a surrounding ring shaped pool. It was designed by the Italian architect Onofrio de la Cava who also designed the smaller fountain on the far eastern end of Stradun near the base of the bell-tower.

Water is a must for people visiting Dubrovnik in the hot sunny days of summer. This is the Onofrio's Fountain, a 16 side drinking fountain which was designed by the Italian architect Onofrio de la Cava in 1440. The fountain is a part of the city's elaborate water system with fresh water coming all the way from Rijeka at 12km away. Onofrei's fountain is located right after the entrance in the Dubrovnik Old City (fortress).

Upon entering the Pile Gate and opposite to the church of St. Salvation you'll find one of the city's highlights before you. Onofrio's Fountain is a 16-sided drinking fountain that was built by Italian architect, Onofrio de la Cava in the 15h century. The Fountain is part of the town's water supply system which Onofrio managed to create by bringing the water from the wells of Rijeka Dubrovacka about 8 miles (12 km) from Dubrovnik. Nowadays it's a popular meeting spot for city locals.

Strategically located, this fountain from the 15th century, is visited by everybody, either to drink its cool water, either to wash face and hands. Sixteen fountains always pouring water brought from a well 20 km distant, welcome the visitors.

This water well was built during the 15th century and brings water from 12 km away. The water still runs today and you can drink or wash your hands in it. It is located inside the City walls as you enter through the Pile Gate you will see it just before the Stradun , the main street.

Entering the old City though the pile gate you will se Onofrios fountain, or whats left of it. Part of the fountain was destroyed in an earthquake in 1667.
There are still 16 masks remaining from wich clean water still runs.

Fountain with decorated taps

The most popular place to meet in Dubrovnik.
It is sometimes difficult to find a free tap around the fountain. All the tourists are washing their hands and faces here. They refresh and drink the water.
It is drinkable and it is said that if someone drinks this water he or she will come back to Dubrovnik in future.
And if someone wants any love dream to come true he or she must drink the water from all the taps. So don't be suprised if you notice some girls running around the fountain and drinking the water... :-)
