Bergedorf is a small town inside of the city-limits of Hamburg and it has plenty of old half-timbered buildings including a very famous half-timbered church and a lovely water-castle : The Bergedorfer Schloss that is used as a museum today. The interior of the museum is really worth a visit for some great furniture and old decorations. Something special in Bergedorfer Schloss is an old confectionary dating back to the middle of the 19th century, itb is fully equipped with lovely furniture and may be rented for private festivities. For just 15 Euros you may fly in a captive balloon over Hamburg. The balloon takes up to 30 passengers and you stay in a hight of 150 meters ( it is the highest viewpoint in Hamburg!) The whole flight takes about 20 minutes and you may walk around in the gondola of the balloon and take a lot of great pictures, also of the big ocean-liners docked in the nearby new cruise-terminal at Grasbook-Kai. Weather permitting the balloon is operated between 10.00a.m. and 10.00p.m. a single flight is 15 Euros / 8 euros for children 3-12 years old 10 Euros for children 12-18 years old 2 flights are in average a lot cheaper : 22,50 / 15 / 12 Euros that makes sense, when you plan to see the city once in dayligt and once at night (NOT necessarily the same day !!) Tickets for the balloon will entitle you also for 50% reduction of the entrance-fee for the Deichtorhallen-Museum next to the balloon ! Leave a Comment

In Schulau, about 25km west of the city of Hamburg, you will find a very special place for all sailors arriving in Hamburg or leaving that port again. In Schulau there is the so-called "Welcome-Hoeft" , a great restaurant with a lovely view on all the ships passing by. There is also a ship-station that will show the flags and play the national anthem of the home-port of all ships passing by and they will also announce a message of welcome or fare-well. You may get to Schulau best by S-1 from Hamburg to the terminus Wedel and then go on by bus #489. Wedel & Schulau are still included in the day-tickets of Hamburg !! Of course plenty of local people will be there, when the biggest cruise-ship of the world is leaving Hamburg there : M/S Freedom of the Seas I was 3 minutes too late :-((( In my last picture : M/S VISTAFJORD leaving the port of Hamburg in Schulau . This picture was taken by my mother on my very first day onboard in 1978 Leave a Comment

The Feuerschiff is an interesting sight, docked close to the ships "Cap San Diego" and "SS Rickmer Rickmers". The Feuerschiff / Fire-ship was built in 1952 and used as a swimming light-tower in Great Britain. In 1991 it was sold to a group of people in Hamburg, who restored and rebuilt it as a perfect restaurant, bar and even hotel. I was lucky to be able to walk around the ship in the morning before all the visitors arrived. My favorite part was the engine-room that was transfered into a perfect bar - see my pics under the restaurant-tips !! Some of the rooms may be rented by tourists as hotel-rooms ! The Feuership is open to the public free of charge every sunday they offer a breakfast-buffet between 09.30a.m. and 01.00p.m. in the engine-room there is a Jazz-Frühschoppen 11.00a.m.-02.30p.m. The restaurant is open for lunch & dinner between noon and 10.00p.m. Leave a Comment

Hafenstrasse used to be a synonym for militant students back in 1968. They illigeally took posession of several empty houses in Hafenstrasse and succeded in all of the fights they had with the local police. A few years later the city of Hamburg made a contract with them and so they are living there now legally, with a great view over the port at one of the most beautiful places in the city. Many of these buildings have colorfull grafities, and it might be worth to walk through it. Many smaller details may still show that this is rather a fortification than a normal building... a place, that was not entered by police, firebrigades or any other legal representatives since 1967... Hafenstrasse is about halfway between Fischmarkthalle and St.Pauli Landungsbruecken. From Landungsbruecken you may take bus#112 and get out after 1 station ! Leave a Comment

Within the city of Hamburg, BUT at its west-end you find Ovelgoenne ( the local spelling is Oevelgoenne). This small fishing village is well known for the Museumshafen , a small port full of old ships and the special thing about that museum is, that you may see these ships docked in port like they would be still used today. Some of them could be rented upon reservation for cruises or festivities while beeing docked in port (read about details in my Ovelgoenne-page !) You may approach these ships easily all day long, as there is no fence around this small port. You are not allowed to go onboard, but of course you could, when nobody watches you. --- --- --- --- --- --- --- The Museumshafen is directely at the dock, where the ships #62 (St.Pauli Landungsbruecken-Finkenwerde) are landing, and just about 200 meters from the place, where the Hamburg-bus #112 will end. The Island Neuwerk with its small islands Scharhoern and Nigehoern belongs to Hamburg too, although it is situated further downstream. Today Neuwerk is the center of a national nature reserve, Nationalpark Hamburgisches Wattenmeer . The Island can be reached from Cuxhaven on foot with a guided tour, or by horse carriage, or by ship. web page: Nationalpark Hamburgisches Wattenmeer (in German): http://www.nationalpark-hamburgisches-wattenmeer.de/ .
