All the gorgeous old villas are dominated by wooden balconies, little corner towers, and some lovely wooden detailed decorations. This architecture reminds you of the art nouveau (Jugendstil) architecture and framework houses as well. Especially at the stony beach near the Kreidefelsen (Königsstuhl) but also at some other beaches of Rügen beautiful stones of all shapes and colours can be found. They can get very very heavy in your backpack when you have to carry them up the stairs through the woods to the parking place. Leave a Comment

A part of the 5km long building is now used for several museums. The “Eisenbahn- und Technikmuseum” presents some old trains, fire-engines, etc. and the historical museum gives you an insight in the rooms of the Prora-building and their former using. Leave a Comment

The wide sandy beach of the seaside resort Binz is in my eyes the most beautiful beach on the Island. With a length of 5km and clear white sand this beach is a nice place to be for the whole family. From the splendid Sea-Bridge you can start by boat to the Kreidefelsen. Leave a Comment

Rügen is quite famous for its amber. If you are lucky, you can find some on the beach!
Amber is the hardened resin of coniferous and angiosperms trees. The sticky extrusive mass that comes from a cut on a pine tree is resin. Under the proper conditions the resin undergoes certain physical and chemical changes that turn it into amber.
Each locality produces amber of a distinct type. Often the location of the amber can be derived visually from the amber itself. Baltic amber may have a cloudy appearance, due to air bubbles. The thicker the flow, the more bubbles that remained. The thinner the flow, the fewer the bubbles. Baltic amber also has a high percentage of succinic acid, as much as 8% by weight.
Amber comes in many colors. Typically amber golden yellow, but can also be green, red blue and clear. Surprisingly, it is relatively stable and is insoluble even in many organic solvents. It has a specific gravity of 1.05 to 1.09 and therefore floats - it should sink if the specific gravity is greater than 1. The Greeks believed that amber was the petrification of sunrays; some even felt that it was petrified tears. They prized amber for the magical properties that electricity exhibited when rubbed. The term electricity is derived from the Greek word, elektron, which is also the Greek word for amber. The better quality amber was and often is polished and used for jewelry.
The selective entrapping of insects and other small animals is a fascinating aspect of the fossil. Large animals are often strong enough to break free of the sticky resin, while small insects such as ants, bees, beetles and mites are usually not strong enough to break free from its hold. It is for this reason that animals most often-found in amber are Arthropods. Leave a Comment

Beaches on isle of Rügen are great, unique.... which word I should take for it? Fine sand beaches change with cliff lines and stones. Luxurious beaches, natural beaches. The last I like more, of course. That´s me.
Belong the coast you find forests. And inmidst the forests everywhere cottages, trailer (fixed), little homes, mostly of the time from former GDR, rests of that time. But reconstructed mostly. You can´t see from the road and outside, very hidden.
Sand, sand, everywhere sand, in forests, villages, naturally at beach.
And strolling people there, searching for amber. It is possible to find. I found also that days a little bit, again. Leave a Comment

What I miss when I remember for that journey? At first the moments at Sea. Lying in sand, reading a book, listening for waves. So peaceful, when you are there in off-season. Or at evening. Strolling at waterside, watching children and relaxed persons. Watching the sunsets and dream a while..... Pure romance. I miss it again during I write that tip. :( Leave a Comment

For the way back to Puttgarten from Kap Arkona I wouldn’t recommend the direct way but the coastline which brings you to the small, lovely old village Vitt where 30 inhabitants live. Vitt has a little port and old houses with the typical reed roof. Leave a Comment

The Schmachter See in Binz is a very idyllic place. Here you can admire romantic sundowns or have a walk along the little lake. As it is a part of the national parc of Rügen it is not allowed to swim in the Schmachter See. Leave a Comment
