Rough Seas
  • Tip Rating:
  • The seas very often crash over the promenade below the cliffs of the North Bay (this is called "Marine Drive"). The road is sometimes closed because it is too dangerous to drive along it, and obviously you shouldn't go there on foot either at those times. Work is going on to improve the sea defences here - you may see cranes and diggers on the shore.

    Valley Bridge
  • Tip Rating:
  • Valley Bridge had become a very "popular" spot for people to commit suicide. Don't ask me why, but the bodies falling to the road (or into the duckponds of Valley gardens) is not very good for the tourist trade, so the council erected these huge (but quite picturesque given the circumstances) barriers along both sides of the bridge to make it a bit more difficult to fling yourself to your doom.
If you still feel inclined, use the Valley Footbridge, running parallel to this a hundred or so meters further towards the sea.

    The ozone layer
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are two towns in England that I know of with a very high ozone layer - Blackpool and Scarborough. A few people find that after just a short while in Scarborough they develop headache and some dizzyness. I have heard of people retiring here but having to leave because they feel ill . Of course this rare but worth mentioning - we have a family member who can only stay in Scarborough for a short time before feeling ill.

    Ups and downs
    Scarborough is very hilly.

The trick is to get where you're heading without gaining or losing more height than necessary. On the other hand, if you MUST start climbing, you find the easiest way.

So first of all, don't descend to the beach unless that's really where you're heading.

If you start from the south cliff and you want to go to town, go the scenic way along The Esplanade, then downhill to the Spa Bridge. On the return, however, go the back way, over the Valley Bridge and along the Ramshill Road, where the gradient is much less noticeable.

If you stay long enough, you'll learn that Scarborough is a great town for walking, as everything is close to hand, but you'll also learn how to save energy!

    Seagulls
Having a house on a cliff by the Baltic Sea, I thought I was used to seagulls being everywhere but that was until my first visit to Scarborough! Nowhere else have I seen as many seagulls and especially as intrusive. They really run the town and as you can see in the photo, they even nest on houses along Foreshore Road! Therefore, bring earplugs if you want to make sure you get a good nights sleep in a seaside B&B. The noise starts early :)))

Fog - or as they are called locally - sea rokes - are an occasional problem throughout the year.
As the photo of the South Bay shows the castle that would dominate this view cannot even be seen. Outside the town it was a sunny June day but in town and the fog lies low. Everything feels damp and it is not pleasant. It lingers too so if you arrive early and there is fog head out of town and come back another day if you can.
