The Magpie Cafe: 2 British traditions: Queueing and Fish n Chips!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The Magpie is notorious, not just as a fish restaurant, but mainly for the queues to gain entrance to its establishment.
These queues form all through the day and evening! Last orders at 2100hrs!
Some people visit weekly at least, to sample the delicacies and ambience!

For years, when I'd visited Whitby, I'd witnessed these queues, and assumed it was a "coach party, run of the mill, fish n chip joint"!

However, recently I was treated to a meal here, we got there just before the queues formed.

Yes, you can have the usual cod, chips and peas, which is probably more expensive than other establishments..if this is what you want, probably best to try nearby cafes or take aways and avoid the queue, but risk scavenging seagulls pinching your feast ( Although I've found Bridlingtons seagulls to be the worst offenders!)

The Magpie is licensed, and offers a variety of fish dishes, including a £17 platter, which 1 member of a Japanese party was devouring, followed by bread and butter pudding!

I had the traditional cod chips and peas, Which were satisfactory, but my Father had a fish pie, which he thoroughly enjoyed. my Mums salmon salad was declared to be delicious too!

When I next visit, I'll try something other than cod and chips, as these are best eaten out of newspaper on the seafront!! but this is one place to try something different from the usual seaside fare.

Elizabeth Bothams: Authentic old fashioned English tea room!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • An English tearoom/cafe. Bothams has been in existance for over 135 years.

Waitress service, (traditional waitress uniforms, black dress/white apron/cap) selection of teas, coffees etc, toasted teacakes, cakes, salads, sandwiches , snacks etc.
Licensed too, with selection of Yorkshire beers, and wines (not Yorkshire!)

Table cloths, swags and curtains etc., lend to the Victorian/Laura Ashley ambience.
Selection of magazines, local books to read while waiting for/ consuming your order.

The tearooms are upstairs, but theres a stenna chair lift for those who can't manage the climb!

Downstairs is the bakers/confectioners shop, where you'll be spoilt for choice!! cakes, buns, biscuits, teas/coffees, hampers are all there to tempt you!

Theres a newer branch on Baxtergate, but Skinner Street is the original...and to my mind the Best!!

I enjoyed a pot of Earl Gray tea and toasted teacake, smothered in butter! yummee!!

On my most recent visit I had Earl Gray tea and Yorkshire Brack with Wensleydale Cheese

Yorkshire Brack is a delicious fruit loaf, very moist (the fruit is soaked in tea) I bought a loaf of this in the shop downstairs too!

Theres also a stem ginger brack, which I'll try no doubt on my next visit!!

Originally, I was planning to eat Fish & Chips sitting by the harbour, but it was cold and had started raining. :-(

The owner of my accommodation had recommended this place as being suitable for a lone female to eat and drink without feeling uncomfortable. (some of the other restaurants/bistros had been full of family groups, or couples enjoying a candle lit meal)

Armed with a paperback, I entered the warm pub.

The bar was well stocked with draught beers, and the menu offered a variety of hot & cold dishes. Order at the bar.

    Non smoking lounge.

A mixed crowd of locals, and visitors from the UK and overseas.

Yes, I felt quite comfortable here, a nice atmosphere.

The place got quite busy after 8pm, with people waiting for seats.

If you can, get a seat near the window, so you can enjoy the view over the River Esk to the West Cliff.

I had a prawn sandwich, with salad garnish plus chips.

The sandwich was full of juicy prawns, and the chips were hot, and delicious.

The service was good too, despite being quite busy.

    Magpie Cafe: Fish and Chips
  • Tip Rating:
  • Well Whitby has oodles of fish and chip cafes and restaurants - you can't beat good old British fish'n'chips by the seaside. Of all the places here the Magpie is probably the most well known one. Always a queue to get in so it mush be recommended. Well we didn't try - we had tasty Nachos and veggie fajitas waiting for us back at "Steve's cafe" ;-)

When we got our chips we discovered that Robertsons serves Fried Mars Bars. I used to have one in Belfast once but Steve never had one so after we had finished our lunch we had to return here for the special dessert: A freshly made, sweet, sticky fried Mars Bar - the taste sensation!

Half a fried Mars Bar as it gets way too sweet after you have finished hapf of it. Had to eat a whole one though.... Oh well, it will take another 5 years I guess until I get the next one!

Robertsons (Thanks, Susan :-): Fish and Chips...
  • Tip Rating:
  • When a whole town smells of Fish & Chips you can't really escape the craving to eat some. We got some from the chipper at the bridge and ate them at the beach. Very tasty and fresh fish. The portions were a bit too huge though!

The Fish ... and the dessert from my next tip!

The Shepherd's Purse: Alternative Cakes and Clothes
  • Tip Rating:
  • This place is an ecological paradise. There's clothes, food, cakes, drinks, crafts here... all very healthy, ecological or alternative. Not really my cup of tea but a nice spot for a drink or some cake.

The sofas and a cool drink.

    Java: Trendy coffee place

One of the more modern establishments in Whitby, catering for both the locals and holidaymakers.

A comfortable, friendly place to relax over a coffee or two. High stools in the window, with more comfortable seating further back.

A wide selection of coffees, hot choc, teas etc, plus cookies, muffins etc.
The staff are all friendly and enthusiastic.

The day I visited was MacMillan coffee morning...(An annual Breast Cancer charity event) with raffles, donations etc.

I had a latte, I was in a bit of a rush, as I was on my way to Robin Hoods Bay, and my parking time was nearly overdue, but I wanted to donate to the Macmillan fund.

My next visit to Whitby, I'll definately linger longer!

    Bridge Cafe: Time For Lunch
  • Tip Rating:
  • This cafe is a typical diner style serving up foods such as fish and chips, nothing special but good, filling food.

I had the £5.95 fish and chips and it was quite nice, not greasy like some fish that you get.

    The magpie: Seafood Galore
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The magpie cafe is a distinctive looking black and white building located on the harbour front, on the west side of whitby town. It has its distinctive steps up to the front where you will infact have to have a slight queue to make sure you get a seat. The restaurant is so popular that I reccomend getting there for opening time 11.30 (most days) and waiting with the others that will be there in the queue on the steps, otherwise later on you will have to wait for a table. They do however now have a takeaway next door, which offers all the traditional fish and chips, and if you fancy eating some the traditional way out of the paper is also worth a try.The cafe has been around since the 1930's and has lovely views over the harbour. It has the feel of a traditional british cafe. The cafe always offers friendly and speedy service. The magpie has won numerous awards and is recognised as one of the best fish and chip shops in britain.

The food however is brilliant and what has given magpie its excellent reputation. They specialise in local fish dishes , and offer a wide range of dishes using specialist ingredients. I still have yet to taste fish and chips like I have in the magpie. It is just slight more expensive than some of the other fish restaurants in the area but it is well worth it. It is also worth noting that the portion sizes are on the generous side. They offer kids meals and generally its worth sticking to these for the children as even the adults find the adults meals a challenge.

There are two dishes at the magpie I have to reccomend. Firstly traditional fish and chips is excellent here and you wont try anything like it and its always on the large size. You can choose sizes and also what fish you would like, cod, haddock and even the local special whitby woof is on offer. This is one of the famous dishes here and is worth a try - its similar to a haddock.

My personal favourite dish is the seafood chowder. If you like to try a bit of everything then this dish is for you. The bowl is huge and I have still not yet managed to get through it all. You get Scallops, Muscles, Clams, Linguistine, Salmon, White fish and sometimes crab claws (seasonal), in a creamy sauce served with a bread roll. They also offer a seafood salad which again gives you a chance to try a bit of everything.

Also worth noting the magpie offer weekly specials (giving seasonal dishes), kids menus (not only fish), weight watchers menu, and also some fantastic deserts and starters.
