During the Victorian era, the red tiled cottages at the foot of the east cliff were filled with workshops that crafted famous Whitby jet into ornate jewellery and objects. Antique crafted examples of the distinctive black gem can be bought in the tourist shops where the jet workshops used to be.

The Shepherds Purse naturally...: My favourite shop!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • I discovered this shop a few years ago, and fell in love with it! So each trip to Whitby, I have to call here!

Entering from the street, you're in foodie heaven! A deli counter stocked with cheeses, including local Yorkshire produce, cooked meats, pates etc. A wide selection of teas and coffees. Shelves stocked with a wide variety of pastas and other dried goods. Biscuits, cakes and chocolates. Spices and herbs, preserves etc.

Step through to the back , and you're surrounded by rails crammed full of delicate silk camisoles and dresses, embroidered, with beading/sequins etc. Beaded mules and sandals, plus jackets, wacky wellingtons etc.

Carry on further in , and you're in the Sanders Yard Restaurant, where fresh cakes, gateauxes, sandwiches can be bought, either to eat inside, or if its warm, venture out side, and sit in the relaxing courtyard.

    Accom available too!

Local produced goods - cheeses, jams, chutneys.

A dress or top for 'that special occasion'

Enjoy afternoon tea or elevenses/ lunch in Sanders Yard.

If, like me, you become smitten with this establishment, check out my accomodation tip on Sanders Yard!

Pheew! from a few pence to as much as you/ your bank manager can afford!

Charity shops: Cheap goods, and helping charities!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Like a lot of towns in the UK, Whitby has a smattering of Charity shops.
People donate their unwanted clothes and household goods, to sell, with the money going to charity.

Oxfam, Cancer Research, Samaritans, Help The Aged, and others have shops within easy reach.

So if the weather turns unexpectedly good, or more likely bad, you can pick up a cheap jumper/jacket , which even if you don't wear it in your hometown, you've done someone a good turn!

Paperback books are a good buy, if you're stuck in a B&B or rainlogged campsite.

You can sometimes find designer labels that have hardly been worn, I found a Planet trouser suit for GBP6! Which fitted perfectly.

During the Goth Fest, these shops were selling an array of Goth clothing!

    70's and 80's gear

    designer clothes

    books

    cd/cassette/video recordings

    costume jewellery

    cassettes usually about GBP1 - 2
    skirts/trousers GBP 3
    paperbacks

The large windows of this shop are crammed full with shelves of games and puzzles.
As it was closed, I'm not sure of its inner contents, but it appeared to sell every board game manufactured.

Aimed more at the traditional games player (i.e. pre Playstation/ X Box etc)

A variety of chess sets , mah jong, backgammon, dominoes, draughts, solitaire sets in different materials.

Monopoly, Scrabble, ludo, snakes and ladders, plus many others.

Replace your battered old Monopoly game.

Treat yourself or someone else to one of the unusual chess sets.

Fortune's Whitby Cured Kippers: A Fortune - ate find !!!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Heading down the 199 steps, you'll soon be aware of the heady scent of burning wood chippings, with a tinge of smoked fish, above the rooftops to the right, you'll probably see a whisp of smoke.

At Fortunes, Kippers have been cured since 1872. Around this time, Whitby was a thriving fish port, with many of its families being involved in the catching, treating and selling of fish. Smokehouses would have been a common sight and smell!

As far as I know, this is the only remaining shop / smokehouse in Whitby.

Well worth stopping by to read the newspaper cuttings in the window (several TV cooks have featured Fortunes on their programmes- James Martin, Two Fat Ladies etc.)
Next to the shop door is the smoke house, where racks of kippers hang above smouldering oak wood chips. Around the door frame can be seen the black oil from the smoked fish.

Although I didn't purchase any kippers, there was a steady stream of shoppers, cramming into the tiny shop.

Besides kippers, there was kipper pate and smoked meats to tempt the palate!

Hopefully enough people will purchase these delicacies during their visit- The 2 brothers that run the family business are under pressure from EEC regulations- they can only sell from these premises, and aren't allowed to send mail order. Also, it is unlikely that any of their offspring will be continuing the family craft.

I'm not sure about the prices, but I think the pate was £1.99 a tub.

    ***: Jet Jewellery
  • Tip Rating:
  • I noticed quite a number of jewellery shops in Whitby selling Jet jewellery. There's the Original Whitby Jet Shop, Victoria Jet Workshop, Sandgate Jet, etc.

Jet has been used for thousands of years in ornaments and jewellery. It's a semi-precious stone that, once it's polished, becomes a deep opaque black stone. It also is the origin of the term jet-black.
Jet mining has been done in Whitby since the Bronze age but really came into fashion in Victorian times. It is also now very popular with Goths.

    Shepherd's Purse: Unique Items
  • Tip Rating:
  • This shop has a deli at the front, various gift style items just back from that and lovely items of clothing near the back of the shop. They also have a restaurant, Sanders Yard Restaurant, and accomadations available. There's the Jade Attic, above the store, and Dove Cottage and Doll Cottage in the courtyard.

Cheese from the deli and the gorgeous clothing. Even if you don't buy the clothes, try something on and take a peak at the great changing room upstairs.

Botton Village Store: Organic food shop on the moors
  • Tip Rating:
  • What a find in such a remote location! The Botton Village Store is an organic food store in the middle of nowhere - south of Danby and follow the signs on single track roads to Botton. Wonderful selection of organic food in a new modern shop with staff who understand the value of what they sell. Not cheap but people come from miles around to buy.

The bread is freshly made at the nearby craft centre. Good range of herbs for casseroles etc.
    Organic drinks too.

    Whitby Jet
Whitby is famous for its jet - a highly polished black stone that is worn as jewellery. It was particularly loved by the Victorians, who wore it as part of their mourning clothes.

Lots of shops sell Whitby jet, the best place to look is in the little shops on the Abbey side of the Harbour. It is not a precious stone so the prices are in reach of most pockets, depending on the quality of the silver that the jet is set in.
