 | York Off the Beaten Path | Tips 1 - 10 of 134 | | It's easy to miss Holy Trinity church, off Goodramgate. Its tiny, peaceful churchyard is hidden behind Lady Row (some of the oldest houses in England) and is reached by a short alleyway. The church dates from the 1400's, although there was a church on the site as early as 1082. The interior is exactly as it was in the 1700's, complete with box pews black with age. Very evocative, and very peaceful. Leave a Comment Other Contact: Church open Tue - Sat, 10 - 4.

Castle Howard is truly remarkable. I should probably stop right there (I won't, of course) because further description runs the risk of rampant over use of superlatives. The 18th century house is incredible on several levels not the least of which is the fact that it is still a private residence. The Honorable Simon Howard and his family, in fact, do live there although not necessarily throughout the entire facility. A description of the 10,000 acre estate is futile here and I would suggest you check out their website below. It would certainly be possible to spend a day viewing the castle exhibits, including one describing the filming of Brideshead Revisited for PBS, and wandering the grounds and gardens. If you're anything like me, you'll take a briefer more non-directive approach and just try to soak it all in. Leave a Comment

In the center of the formal garden in the front of Castle Howard is the Atlas Fountain. It is certainly one of the more spectacular water effects for a fountain that I have seen. It probably can't compete with the sculptural splendor of the likes of Trevi but for sheer volume and making a grand entrance this is pretty good. The fountain itself was designed by W. A. Nesfield in 1850. The water for the fountain is completely gravity fed from a series of artificial lakes and reservoirs on the estate. Leave a Comment

Lady's Row is a collection of 11 small houses on Goodramgate which still contain evidence of their 14th Century origin. I like the way the house slope outwards onto the streets - it almost feels like the upper storeys will fall into the street below. Leave a Comment

What a great name for a street. I wish more streets had great names like Whipmawhopmagate - it's rather more interesting than Castle St. or High St. Only 32 metres long, It's very easy to miss this street, which starts at the end of Colliergate and ends at the junction of Pavement and Stonebow. Despite the plaque on the wall claiming the street name derieves from "What a street", Historians are divided over the true origin of the name. Some believe the "What a street" derivation, others believe it is related to the annual (in medieval times) Whip Dog Day, while another group believe the public whipping post on nearby Pavement may have been the inspiration. Well this is not exactly off the beaten path but it fits in appropriately as far as the settings are concerned!!! The York Astronomical Society has it's observatory with a few very good telescopes a little outside the main city of York for members of the society and guests too for a night of astronomical observations using their Meade 125mm refractor telescope (and others too). The picture includes the Chairman Martin Dawson and Martin Whipp who is the editor of Algol - their monthly newsletter!!! Also in the picture is David and Debbie Brigham and a couple of other amateur astronomers including me!!! Leave a Comment

One of the most enjoyable things about wandering York's city centre is finding old streets and alleys such as Lady Peckitt's Yard. This tiny street, which connects Pavement to Fossgate, is named after the wife of John Peckitt, who was Lord Mayor of York in 1702. What stands out on this street is the black and white timbered houses, which conveys how York looked in Tudor times. Leave a Comment

One of York's forgotten churches, Holy Trinity Goodramgate looks like one of the most atmospheric churhes in York. There are two entrances to the church - from Goodramgate and from Horn Pot Lane, just off Petergate, though both were closed during our visit so we could only see it from the street. Leave a Comment

Each day wherever I went I made a point of taking an early morning walk before breakfast. It is surprising what you see at such an hour. You get to see the comings and goings of people and things not seen during the day. It gives you a real feel for the area. And you can have a good look at the lovely front gardens along the streets. Another bonus is you get to work off some of the calories you are about to ingest at the breakfast table. Leave a Comment

Much of the area that the public sees a at first at Castle Howard is pretty formal but it does encompass 10,000 acres and a lot of the estate presents some very natural beauty. Surprisingly some is quite close to the castle itself. It was early when we arrived and there was an English mist clinging to the ground. Immediately behind Castle Howard is a large expanse of lawn which leads to a lake. When I first saw it, however, I felt certain that at any moment the hounds would be emerging from fog over the moors. It was not until about an hour later that the placid lake pictured here finally revealed itself. Not a bad view to wake up to. Leave a Comment
