Jorvik Viking Centre: Take the tour
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ok - no pic for this activity. Its definitely touristy, but if you have about 30 - 40 minutes to spare, take the tour. Its a 'ride' that takes you through the life and times of the Vikings when they settled in Jorvik (York) in AD 876. Definitely interesting (at least to ME!). At the end of the 'ride' there is a room where they explore more of an actual skeletal frame dug up from the archeological dig, pointing out actual fractures, wounds to the skull and other bones from battle. Quite interesting to see and learn about.

  • This center was built on the site where the archaeologists discovered the original Viking settlement. Look through their web pages to get more info!

Jorvik Viking Centre: Think about it.
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are expecting Jorvik to be some sort of theme park ride, you'll be disappointed. It's not.......it's an attempt to present the findings of an incredibly important excavation to the general public, whilst raising funds for continuing research. The unique waterlogged conditions of the Jorvik site enabled all sorts of organic material to be retrieved (from socks to cess) and added hugely to our knowledge of Viking life in York.
If you are genuinely interested in finding out how people lived in the past, then Jorvik is for you.....but be prepared to queue!

  • It's up to you whether this is a tourist trap or a must see. I found the museum section of the centre interesting, though the "ride" through ancient York is a bit goofy. You climb into a "time-capsule" and take a tour through a village from Viking times while you listen to conversations, check out the sights, like the man on the toilet (oh my!) and also experience the smells, yes the smells, of a Viking village.
The centre is actually built on the exact site of an archealogical dig where they recovered well preserved remains of the Viking village of Jorvik.
I enjoyed the artifact hall where objects which had been recovered were displayed. There are 4 large cases which these objects are displayed in and through the use of illusion they incorporate these objects with the scenes in which they would be used. You'll have to see it to understand what I mean.
Admission is £6.95 for an adult.

    Jorvik Viking Centre: Jorvik Centre
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Jorvil Centre takes you back in time to the days of the Vikings and up to present day archaeolgical findings.

You board a "time machine" and are wisked back in time to the Viking days. On leaving the machine you board capsules which take you through a typical Viking Village. A commentary tells you what you are looking at and a detailed outline of viking life. Blue Peter recently had one of its presenters added as a figure in the village along with one of the Blue Peter dogs!!

After leaving the capsule, you find yourself in the area that covers what has been found during archaeological digs. The centre piece is a complete viking skeleton.

From there you move to the small and expensice gift shop!

While i enjoy the Jorvik centre, i always come away feeling "was that it?".

Also you are are not allowed to take pictures as you move round the village.

  • An interesting place for adults and children alike. Even if the child doesn't speak much English they will be fascinated by the smells, noises, scenes from Viking life and the car travelling back in time.

For Diana, one of the highlights of the tour was seeing 'Viking Poo'.

  • We queued for ages for this attraction, and were really dissapointed with it when we finally got in. Not a cheap 15mins, but we did get lots of fresh air waiting to get in. The only good thing I found was that each carriage had built in speakers so you select your own language.

Jorvik Viking Centre: The Jorvik museum is extremely...
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Jorvik museum is extremely popular. It’s been rebuilt in recent years but I think that most tourists visited it for the smelly effects. You travelled through the museum on a train and at the appropriate time you got the appropriate smell. I’m not sure how they have changed that but I would say it is still bound to be a lot of fun.

Jorvik Viking Centre: The Jorvik Viking Centre.
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Jorvik Viking Centre in York, opened in April 1984 and has had over 12 million visitors through its doors to travel back in time to the Viking Age.

Here, archaeologists discovered the preserved remains of Jorvik - the place the Vikings once called home. They used these remains to create one of the world's most enthralling reconstructions of the Viking Age. Now, a new chapter in Jorvik's history has opened, following 20 years of academic research into the excavations of the site on which the Jorvik Viking Centre now stands. In a major redevelopment, this research has been used to transform the Jorvik Viking Centre into new JORVIK - a must-see for all visitors to the city of York.

  • This used to be quite a tourist trap with queues as long as the road to London. They came to travel in electric cars around a viking village based on archaeological diggings around the Coppergate centre in York. The experience was total and you could even smell the village and hear Scandinavian sounding voices. It has recently undergone a complete refurbishment and loads of changes have taken place. I haven't yet been to the new centre but from what I've seen it looks promising. York used to be a viking capital for a long time and you can still see it in street- and village names around town as well as hear it in the local dialect which is full of Scandinavian words. Street is 'gate' in Yorkshire for instance. Not the first sight I would see in the city (unless I was a Scandinavian, then it's a must!) but definately up there when you've seen Castle Museum, the Railway Museum and the Minster. If you want to see more of viking York, come in February (see my travelogue) and also visit the Stamford Bridge battle memorial (see off the beaten path).
