    Nottingham dialect
  • Tip Rating:
  • I like the Nottingham accent, which is halfway between a Brummy (Birmingham) and a Yorkshire accent. But, Nottingham not only has its own accent, it also has its own dialect.

Possibly the best know Nottingham expression is the greeting, "Aye up me duck." You will hear this a lot from older ladies. Also what is known as a bread roll in London, in Nottingham is called a "cob". Sometimes, you will see cobs advertised outside cafes and bakeries.

A lot of the Nottingham dialect expressions date back many centuries to when it was a major trading centre for foreign merchants. "Gizza glegg" meaning let me have a look, comes from the Danish glegg for look, while "jitteh" meaning alleyway, comes from colloquial French. There is also a unique Nottingham word for cat, "mazzi", and sometimes in a pub, you may here an old man say: this beer's like mazzi water! Another popular expression nowadays is, "He is well 'ard" meaning he is tough.

    Prince of Thieves
  • Tip Rating:
  • Kevin Costner is how most people imagine Robin Hood. Big bucks and a lot of Hollywood hype turned 'Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves' into a box-office blockbuster around the world. Perhaps the best thing that can be said about it is that even the actors began to realise how corny the whole thing was, and by the end of the film they were parodying themselves. Old Cliffie has to admit, though, that there are some great action scenes with impressive photography.

    Disney's 'Robin Hood'
  • Tip Rating:
  • Old Cliffie is always ready to sit down with the little Clavens when they want to watch Disney's 'Robin Hood'. It's a gem of a film, unremitting fun, with no really evil characters to scare the tots and enough action to keep their more bloodthirsty older brothers and sisters happy. There's a definite innocence about this 1973 film, totally geared to a younger audience, unlike the annual animated features that the Disney studio began to churn out in the 1990s.

    Glory days
  • Tip Rating:
  • Real Madrid, Benfica, Inter Milan, Ajax Amsterdam, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, AC Milan - and Nottingham Forest? Yes the local football team is in there with Europe's soccer greats, as one of the teams that have won the continent's premier club competition, the European Cup, in successive seasons. Forest managed it in 1979 and 1980. It's been pretty much downhill since then.....

    'Duck'
Don't be offended if someone calls you 'duck'. It's a local term of endearment and not an insult!

It is very common to be referred to as a 'Duck' in the East Midlands - and Nottingham is very much the capital of the East Midlands.

If someone is in their 50's or over it sounds quite quaint, but when a youngster says "Thanks Duck" it does sound a little odd.

    Listen out for it.

P.S If you really are a duck, I'm not sure what the ettiquette is.
