The caves inside were once used as servant quarters. The pub has some fabulous food & cheap ales starting at £1.40. The pub is the start of the Nottingham Ghost Walks held every Saturday at 7pm (except in December). They are about 1mile long and take 1¼hours and end in the haunted caves beneath the Inn. Cost £4 & £2 for children & are well worth the money. I went here 2 yrs ago with some work friends & had a fantastic night. The stories were great too & i can still remember some of the real spooky ones. They take you around all the well known places in Nottingham & tell you a spine chilling story about the different places. The pub also does fantastic Sunday Roasts at a cost of £3.95. I'm suprised no-one has mentioned this before. It's got to be one of Nottingham's best tourist attractions for both adults and children. To quote their literature, "This imposing site was in use from the 1780's to the 1980's as courts and prisons. In fact there has been a court here since 1375 and a prison since at least 1449. This authenticity creates a unique experience in this award winning attraction." Allow plenty of time as there is lots to see and do. Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem claims to be the oldest pub in Britain. It reputedly gets its name from the fact that Crusaders gathered here before setting off for the Holy Lands. It was originally the brewhouse for Nottingham Castle and it was probably built shortly after the original castle was established in 1086 . The date on the walls, 1189, was the year Richard the Lionheart was crowned and embarked on the Third Crusade, and the year in which many of the Crusaders gathered here. The half-timbered buildings you can see at the front today were added between 1650 and 1660. The warren of small bars inside are built in the sandstone caves of the original brewhouse, and have uneven, bare rock walls. They are pleasantly cool in summer, but can seem cold and damp in winter, although you can sit close to the electric heaters they put in the bars. Have a beer here: it's listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. Nottingham Castle stands high up on Castle Rock. As you drive along Castle Boulevard, you'll have to crane your neck to look up to it. William the Conqueror built the original castle here in 1067. In 1170, Henry II rebuilt it, making it his main castle in the Midlands. In 1194, it played a key role in the war between Richard the Lionheart and his brother John, when Richard laid seige to the castle and eventually captured it. In the legend of Robin Hood, Robin is always depicted as being on the side of the righteous Richard and an enemy of his evil brother, John. In 1642, King Charles I raised his standard here and gathered his army to start the English Civil War. The parliamentarians, under the command of Colonel Hutchinson, eventually took control of the castle. In 1651, as an act of revenge, Hutchinson demolished the castle. The castle you see today is actually a ducal palace, built by William Cavendish, the Duke of Newcastle and his son, between 1663 and 1678. So, for many visitors, who are expecting a typical medieval castle, like Warwick, it comes as something of a disappointment to see what looks like a very large stone cube standing on top of Castle Rock. It's worth going inside, however, for the gardens, the views of the city and the museums inside the castle. Also, there are some relics of the original castle. Opening times: Summer 10am-5pm, Winter 10am-4pm Admission (with Brewhouse Yard): Adults £3, Children, Students & Seniors £1.50 Leave a Comment Address: Castle Street, NottinghamPhone: 0115 915 3700

Before 1066 castles were pretty much unknown in England. Within five years of the battle of Hastings, William the conqueror had built more than thirty castles to preserve his grip over the English. One of these castles was the fortification of legend. - Nottingham Castle. The original castle was not built of stone but was of earth banks topped by palisading built atop the castle rock with its collection of caves and passages. Over the years it progressed to a massive, self-contained stone fortress. Sadly, following the end of the English Civil War, the year 1651 marked the destruction of the Castle to the general dismay of Oliver Cromwell. Around 20 years later the first Duke of Newcastle built a Renaissance-style palace on the site of the castle remains. But the turbulent history of Nottingham Castle was to continue as, 150 years later, the palace was gutted by the Luddites angry at the Dukes opposition to Parliamentary reform. Nottingham Castle remained a gutted shell for nearly 50 years until it was bought by the Nottingham City fathers in 1875 and restored as the first Provincial Museum of fine Art. Ye olde Salutation is one of the oldest pubs in Nottingham. Archaeological excavations have revealed there was a Saxon settlement on this site in the ninth century. The first large stone building, a tannery, was built here in 1240. The oldest timber in the current building has been dated to 1360. Leave a Comment Address: Houndsgate
