The Scots were almost without exception very hospitable hosts. They are very polite so even though you are in a goodly sized town, don't worry about asking for directions, a good place to eat or just a good spot to rest for a while before continuing on. Don't let their propensity for building fortresses scare you off! Leave a Comment

The Forth Road Bridge charges a toll on motorised northbound trips only (A90 between Edinburgh & Fife). Its free for pedestrians. Traffic can be pretty heavy crossing the bridge. Leave a Comment

The electricity supply voltage is 230V. Equipment rated at 220V may function, but it is advisable to check with the manufacturer before using it in the UK. The standard plug in the UK is a three flat pin model. . Leave a Comment

Weather is described as being cold and clear in winter, warm and dry in summer although Robert Louis Stevenson described it as : . 'The weather is raw and boisterous in winter, shifty and ungenial in summer and downright meteorological purgatory in spring.' Leave a Comment

People don't usually tip in bars, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't! If you're impressed with service any bartender will appreciate a tip. Better still, buy them a drink. (The drink will usually be saved for the end of the night, not drunk there and then.) The strange beers with the numbers ( '80/-' and '70/-') are called eighty shilling and seventy shilling (or just 'eighty' etc) Several different companies make their own versions, Caledonian being (in my humble opinion) the best. The names come from the tax that used to be payable per barrel; the higher the alcoholic strength, the more tax you paid. 60/- and 90/- are also available, but they're quite rare. Leave a Comment

The centre of Edinburgh is very mixed and dynamic, the outskirts can be less inviting. Always try and stay round the centre. Leave a Comment

You do not need to give taxi drivers a tip if you don't want. Most people don't! Leave a Comment
