Cowgate: THE CAVES - Party underneath the city!
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is by far the most spectacular venue in Edinburgh. And NOBODY should miss out on a clubnight in here! Because going to the Caves is not about what kind of music you're into - it's all about this magical place.

Lit up only by giant flickering candles the atmosphere is nothing you ever experienced. To that add upbeat funkmusic pouring from the speakers and the rumours of ghosts haunting these vaults and there should be no hesitation on going here or not - YOU ARE!!!

2 bars - one on each floor.
    Dancefloor on the groundfloor.
Seating area on both floors - in all 5 vaults. Do you dare to enter!?

Watch out for the boogieman! ;)

Age: Depends on whats on. 18-30... some nights there's a younger crowd but DON'T let that stop you. The Caves is well worth a visit anyway... get a table in a secluded vault and you won't even see the youngsters ;)

    Casual.

(Do remember the 100s of candles in there - watch out with scarfs, long skirts and your hair!)

2 floors of pure rock n roll. Cheap drinks. Great crowd. But mainreason for going there: the ace jukebox. Spanning from classic 70s rock to the stars of today. But only the good stuff!
Live music every now and then.

Open from 10pm unitl 3am. Student deals in the bar.

    BEWARE:
Bouncers can be very NOT NICE! Macho overload. Grrr!

Vristbands. Converse. Dr Martens. Black from top til toe. Crazy coloured hair. Band tshirts. Tons of makeup, boys and girls. Skateboard under your arm. Guitarcase on your back. Student ID!

Nah, none of this is real of course. Just gives you an idea where you headin...

    Cowgate: Students favourite
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cheap drinks, cheesy indie music and a sweaty dancefloor - this is a student institution. If you are looking for a snog or just a colourful late night drink this is a place to stumble into when the city's other hotspots seem to far to walk to. Best after several drinks. Open 9pm-3am nightly. Also has a sister club in the city's west end.

    Relaxed

    Cowgate: Club and gig venue
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a great venue for gigs. When a club is on its always great fun but only one disadvantage. It gets hot. You get inside and within 10minutes you're dripping sweat. Its almost dripping from the ceilings and the stone cavelike walls. Good thing the barstaff is always ready to serve you a nicely priced promo drink or beer.

Music varies. Techno. House. Electro. Drum and bass.
Free entry some nights or before a ceratin time. Otherwise £2-10... depending on club and day
Check local paper for information and updates.

    Cowgate: TASTE
  • Tip Rating:
  • Sunday madness.
Highlight of the week. This is what we all are waiting for Mon-Sat...

A progressive House club that started out as a gayclub but became the weeks busiest club for all.
Under the strobe lights people have one thing only in common - dance til you drop.
The DJ:s will make sure this is not a problem: Fisher&Price (also goes by He-Man and Skeletor) rules the main room. The smaller room belongs to Martin Valentine and his funky house tunes.

Tops off guys! Or join the freakshow your way.

    Cowgate: GREYFRIAR'S BOBBY BAR

This is a very pleasant wee bar - when its not tourist season!!! June - August it is that packed that the best thing is to turn in the door and go somewhere else. So it got the name of the famous dog but that's no reason to be crushed to death!

When not as crowded GB Bar is terrific. It's the traditional scottish pub with dark wooden interiors and good ale on tap. Music in here is always surprisingly "rocky" which suits me well! But volume is kept low which makes this a great pub for a good chat with your mates!

    So the story goes...
The heart-warming story of Greyfriars Bobby is probably one of Edinburgh's best-known local tales. One of the things that makes it so appealing to tourists and locals alike is that it is true.
Bobby was a small Skye Terrier who belonged to one John Gray, an out of work gardener. Unable to make a living in his chosen trade, Gray became a policeman. He bought Bobby to accompany him on his rounds as a watch dog - hence the dog's name.

Gray came down with tuberculosis and eventually died of the illness in 1858. He was buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard.
The faithful Bobby was so loyal to its master that he stayed constantly by the grave, refusing to budge in any weather. Some stories say that the only time he left was to get food when the one o'clock gun fired. Then he would go to a local coffee house that Gray had frequented and they would feed him.

So popular was Bobby with the people of Edinburgh that when a new law was passed requiring all dogs to be licenced and collared, the Lord Provost Sir William Chambers paid for Bobby's licence himself.
Bobby kept up his faithful watch until his own death fourteen years later.

    Cowgate: Get Your Moove On
  • Tip Rating:
  • There's a whole range of historic and not so historic pubs and bars along the Cowgate taking you under the bridges along to the Grassmarket.

Whatever you like - from the excellent cellar bar 'Bannermans' to the 'fun-pub' atmosphere of 'Siglo' there something here to suit nearly everyone's taste. How about 'Bliss' which offers chilled out beats, or maybe 'The Three Sisters' which not only packs 3 themed bars and a hotel into one venue but also delivers an excellent (though weather dependent) beer garden out front). It also organises speed-dating weekly on a Tuesday night - though you have to book tickets in advance.

Want more? Well the Subway, Opium and Wilkie House will satsify those wanting a cheap late night dance, while Rush, Bar Union and other venues all offer more options.

Though the Cowgate remains a great place to start a night out the infamous December 2002 fire in the area destroyed a set of bars and venues in the heart of the street. Amongst the casualties were the legendary club Belle Angele and the Loca nightclubs. The HQ for the Gilded Balloon was also destroyed. City planners are still discussing what will replace them.

Meanwhile the '70s theme bar - Abbar (formerly Sneak Peats) is currently being rennovated - I'll update when I know what

So while the Cowgate is probably playing catch up with it's neighbour, the Grassmarket, it is still a good location to start or end a night on the town and remains a popular student haunt - no doubt because many of the flats lining the street belong to the university. It's definitely worth sampling and when/if you want to move on you are only minutes from more late night bars along the Royal Mile, by the uni or the Grassmarket.

Relaxed - though football colours are a bad idea

    Cowgate: Courtyard canoodling
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Three Sisters is actually a hotel that just happens to have of the busiest bars in Edinburgh. There is a courtyard outside with plenty of benches, an occasional bar and even some large screen TVs. Once inside there is the main bar with another bar at the rear. A second venue is on the right hand buiding up the stairs but this is always bursting at the seams when open.

Extremely popular with stag and hen nights so be prepared for some rowdy drinking and don't wear anything that can't handle a bit of spillage.

    Veil, L plates, condoms, etc

  • Cowgate is a street that leads into Grassmarket.

If you're lazy or slightly unsteady, you don't need to venture any further.

    Cowgate: "3-Sisters"
This place is a bit of a "meat market" but its a fun place for drinks and a boogie. On a nice night its great to stand outside or if you're lucky get a table. If you don't want to run into groups of people (usually English or Irish) on a stag/hen night then avoid this place.

Casual - but a bit dressier on a Fri/Sat night
