 | Edinburgh Many Miles From Edinburgh... Reviews | 1 - 10 of 59 | | Stirling is not very big and have a population of 35 000, but it is a city. It recently became the third Scottish city. Stirling Castle is standing on a hill overlooking the city. Below the castle is the Old Town where it is nice to walk around the cobbled streets and admire the historic buildings. Around Stirling there are many old battlefields as Stirling has been an important place throughout Scotland’s history, it’s been called the key to the kingdom. You can easily visit Stirling on a daytrip from Edinburgh or Glasgow as there are frequent trains and it takes less then an hour to go there. Leave a Comment

Just outside Stirling, on a hill, is a monument built in memory of the Scottish freedom fighter William Wallace (1267 – 1305). He and his men met the English army at Stirling Bridge and won a great victory. William Wallace was later betrayed and executed in London. His head was put on London Bridge and his body cut in four pieces and sent to different parts of the kingdom as a warning example. The monument is 67 metres high and 246 steps lead up to the roof from witch it is a vast view over the surrounding landscape. As you walk up you will pass different rooms with different exhibitions. In one room you can see Wallace’s sword and listen to a doll telling the thoughts of Wallace. In another room “The Hall of Heroes” there are busts of famous Scottish people. On one level there is an exhibition of how the monument was built (it was completed in 1869). Entrance fee is 6.00 pounds. When you pay the entrance you get a free audio guide, which will tell you many stories about William Wallace and more. The monument is open: Jan , Feb, Nov, Dec 10.30 – 16.00 Mar, Apr, May, Oct 10.00 – 17.00 June 10.00 – 18.00 July, Aug 9.30 – 18.30 Sept 9.30 – 17.00 Leave a Comment

North Queensferry is a small village on the north shore of Firth of Forth situated between the Forth Bridge and the Forth Road Bridge. After busy sightseeing in Edinburgh it was nice to come here, visit Deep Sea World and walk around in the village for a while. The name Queensferry comes from Queen Margaret who often crossed the Firth of Forth at this place by ferry when she was going between the palace in Dunfermline and her chapel in Edinburgh castle. North Queensferry is only 20 minutes away from Edinburgh by train. Leave a Comment

Having read a lot about Rosslyn Chapel, and then all the hype resulting from Dan Brown's "The Da Vinci Code", I decided I'd better satisfy my curiosity and pay a visit. The chapel from the outside was a disappointment as it was shrouded in scaffolding. The queue to get tickets was long, and inside was packed, so actually being able to examine and photograph the interesting carvings was hard. However, I am glad I made the effort, but would like to have gone before it had become so famous. The chapel belongs to the St Clair family who have links with the Templars and the Merovingian Kings. There is a graveyard round the chapel, and more burial grounds justdown the road. Leave a Comment

Blair castle is one of the most beautiful castles i've ever seen. It's on the way to inverness/perth - a 2-3 hours drive from edinburgh as far as i remember. This is a beautiful white castle with gardens and you can enjoy the place for a few hours on your way to the highlands or return to Edinburgh to enjoy the city. Leave a Comment

I joined a walking company when I stayed in Edinburgh. I was definitely attracted by the booklet - Escape to the Hills. It is a young and vibrant company to dedicated to showing people the beautiful mountainous countryside of the Scottish Highlands. I can't forget those lovely hills and mountains and I chased the sheep on the top of the hill. Leave a Comment

Take a daytrip by train or bus to the historic city of Stirling. It is located just between Edinburgh and Glasgow, so that a trip takes only about 1 hour. Stirling has played an important role in Scotlands rich historical heritage, therefore it offers many well preserved cultural sites in its Old Town. The famous Stirling Castle is situated on a hill and offers panoramic views of the Forth Valley. Plenty of restaurants, cafes, pubs and shops can be found in the modern city centre at the foot of the Old Town. Leave a Comment

The Museum of flight is part of the National Museums of Scotland, situated at the former East Fortune Airfield about 20 miles east of Edinburgh. It has four hangers and sundry other buildings, plus a RAF Vulcan and a Comet charter jet outside, with a collection of military and civil aircraft from the early days, right up to a Concorde. Yes, a real Concorde, codesign Alpha Alpha, BAs very first Concorde. The Vulcan was part of the UK nuclear 'deterrent', equipped to fly to the Arctic and bomb the Soviet Union; the bombs are also on display, decommisioned, of course. Generally, you won't find anything flying, apart from microlights from a nearby airstrip, except on special events. I last went on a WW2 weekend, when they has a Spitfire, a Messerschmidt, a Catalina and sundry other planes flying. There is also an annual airshow... except the 2005 was cancelled due to the G8 summit. To visit, it would take from about ninety minutes for a quick skim, to all day if you are hardcore plane enthusiast. Well worth a visit if at all interested in planes. Open 1000-1700 16 Mar-30 Oct, weekends only rest of year. Admission: £5 Adults, £4 Concessions; Child 12 and under free. Additional £3/£2 to board Concorde. From Edinburgh, take the A1, following directions for Berwick-upon-Tweed, museum is signposted. Leave a Comment

Entering the town of Culross is like finding yourself in a 16th century time capsule. It seems to be frozen in time. Thanks to being bypassed by modern times and having received close attention from the National Trust for Scotland, Culross gives the visitor a unique experience of what it was like many generations ago. This is no Hollywood or Disneyesque recreation; it's the real thing. If you are at all interested in architecture, history, village life, or simply could benefit from an afternoon in a leisure paced town away from the crowds, make Culross a destination. 12 miles west of the Forth Road Bridge away from Edinbugh.

When people think of hillwalking in Scotland, they almost always think of the Highlands. But there is a whole other area of hills, the Southern Uplands. As the name suggests, these are more in the way of rolling hills than craggy mountains, but can still make a useful getaway from the urban areas. The northern fringe of the Uplands is the Pentland Hills, just south of Edinburgh. A substantial area of this forms the Pentland hills Regional Park: 10 000 acres of countryside, over 100km of paths.
