A secret, roof top garden with fantastic city views:

Go to the top floor of the National Museum (free and wonderful) and take the steps to the rooftop viewing area. Here you'll see Edinburgh laid out before you. Its a great spot to sunbathe too, or picnic.

There are excellent places to eat here too, so why hurry?

General Views: A strange change of residence
  • Tip Rating:
  • In 1628 George Heriot, jeweller and goldsmith to James V1, left a sizable amount of money in order that a hospital for poor fatherless boys from Edinburgh could be looked after. Construction of the turreted sandstone building began in 1628. Ironically, the building was completed just in time for Oliver Cromwell & his troops to set up barracks here during the invasion of Scotland. The year 1650 finally saw Heriots wish granted and the building became a hospital & school. The school began to charge fees in the 1880's but free places were & still are available to children who are known as foundationers. Take a look at the second photo to see why Cromwell took a risk!!

For a wonderful view of the city, without the effort or time to climb Arthur's Seat, head along the paths on Salisbury Crags - the very obvious sandstone rock before the full hill ascends. As well as joggers and photographers, you'll see Fulmers swooping and get wonderful scents off the flowering Gorse bushes (yellow flowers).

The Crags are now managed by Historic Scotland (also looking after Holyrood), so they don't like rock climbing - though you'll likey be tempted!

    This is Edinburgh:
The National Gallery is a beautiful building with its stone columns and Greek style architecture. They keep calling Edinburgh the 'Athens of the North', but that isn't helpful, except to affirm that both cities are well worth seeing for real.

In this picture you will also see the impossing Scott Monument, black with soot from the days when Edinburgh reaked with smoke from coal fires. Its far too ornate to be cleaned, and is almost a monument to global warming!

Also note the double decker buses (I wish they were a nicer colour, cleaner, and modern), and the lovely black railings and other street furnishings typical of the city.

If you come to Edinburgh and miss this scene, you never saw it.

    Dynamic Earth, Holyrood &
    Parliament Construction

This is viewed from Salisbury Crags, about a 5 minutes walk above Holyrood.

Dynamic Earth is the white building (no comment) - an educational experience, ideal for families and school children or geography / geology students. Costly though.

Holyrood Palace is the Queen's Official Residence in Scotland (right of picture) - check the flag to see if she is in. Parts are open to the public, along with Holyrood Abbey (see tips).

Parliament Builing Site. One day this will be finished. As of April, 2004, it looks like this - a building site and concrete mess, with hundreds of workmen's portacabins too. I'm not going to comment on the cost or lunacy of the project, or the waste of money with a bloated and over staffed "partial" Government, this being only a part devolved Government with most power still held at Westminster in London. You should glance at any Scottish paper's website for up to date comment. Just be careful if asking a Scot about it - as sensitive as talking about football & religion (same thing).

Students of architecture - please observe closely! When the Parliament is complete, you will have 3 buildings of totally different style and construction adjacent to each other, and I'm sure it'll be horrible.

  • Directions: To see all this cost me nothing, even with a look inside the places, a glance at brochures and sneek view around corners. All in all - Priceless!

Edinburgh's Outlook Tower exists since 1853 and provides a good introduction to the city from Castle Hill. The 17th century building is also equipped with a Camera Obscura which gives an amazing live panorama .

  • Due to its topography, great views may pop up at any moment. This view is from the top of the Mound, with Scott Monument, Princes St Gardens and the Balmoral Hotel.

The second is a vertiginous view up Victoria St, which links the Grassmarket with the Royal Mile. In several parts of the Old Town, especially along the Royal Mile, building height would vary by several stories. Here, eight at the back and (I think) three at the front.

The houses in the third shot are quite near the Royal Mile, corner of the Pleasance and Holyrood Rd, and are much more recent (built around 2000). They are still built in a somewhat higgledy-piggledy style, reminiscent of the much older buildings

  • the princes street gardens are great, with lush green lawns and beautiful walkways. in the heart of edinburgh, separating old town from new, you will more then likely walk through these gardens at one point. the gardens offer nice views of the old town 'skyline'.

A quite oasis in Edinburgh is Holyrood Park. Hey Your In The Country. But please wear sensible shoes or better boots. The park patrol don't need to help another idiot with a sprained ankle.
    Vistas/city is gone.

As you walk around you will soon discover how amazing the layout of the city is. At one time when I thought I was on ground level I came across some railings. I looked over there was a street disapearing underneath me way below.
Massive steps here and there lead you to different levels of the roads. It was pretty awesome at times.
