 | Edinburgh Many Miles From Edinburgh... Reviews | 1 - 10 of 84 | | Across the Firth of Forth, the estuary on which Edinburgh lies, is the Royal County of Fife - A beautiful and rich county riddled with history but largely overlooked. Focus tends to be upon St Andrews and has increased since the prince went to study there but Fife is packed with tiny gems and beauty. Falkland Palace and the fishing harbours (like Crail) make delightful days out and form a wonderful tour, which can include Dunfermline Abbey and Culross if you can drive. It is all a refreshing contrast to the city congestion and built up environment of Edinburgh - so if in Edinburgh for a while, treat yourself to two days out, one to Perth and the other around Fife. My picture shows old fishing boats, either decaying or being slowely restored, on the quayside of thr River Tay - north Fife. Leave a Comment Address: Fife - just north of Edinburgh.Directions: Head across the Forth road bridge and turn east!Website: www.visitscotland.com Other Contact: www.multimap.co.uk

If time is really limited and you want to see the Highland scenery, wildlife, rugged hillsides, stone houses, farms, sheep and hairy cows - in one day out from Edinburgh - read on! Head for the Highlands of Perthshire, just north of Edinburgh. Don't waste your time, energy and petrol money driving all day to the 'big names' - you can be in this photograph just an hour / hour and half from the centre of Edinburgh. Once there take a stroll, relax, have a picnic, watch the birds and animals, and feel good. Leave a Comment Address: Highland PerthshireDirections: Head for the small towns of Crieff, Aberfeldy or Dunkeld. You don't even have to go as far as Pitlochry - though thats fine if you do (see my other tips!!!) Sma' Glen runs north from Crieff - Its beautiful!Website: www.perthshire.co.uk Other Contact: www.multimap.co.uk

Not very far from the centre of Edinburgh and you can be in rolling countryside, full of patchwork fields, stone castles and hairy cows or sheep. Keep an eye out for these ginger cattle - reknown for the excellent quality of their meat - and an oddly mild temperament (except when guarding their young, like any of us). Highland cattle are not everywhere - but you are sure to see them. Usually in very small herds of 10 or so, not big farms. Head for Crieff in Perthshire - home of the Drovers Cattle Trysts ( back in the times of Rob Roy and cattles rievers, Clans and pre Bonnie Prince Charlie) - and in the foothills of the Highlands. Visitor attractions include castles, distilleries and drover exhibition, but I'd go for the countryside, whether touring by car or bus / bike. Leave a Comment

Doune Castle - part of a day trip to the Stirling area, or when travelling towards Glencoe and/or The Trossachs National Park. Its a fun castle - still full of lots of history and fortifications, with wonderful views like this picture - but its also a friendly, relaxed sort of attraction. After shuffling around Edinburgh, with queues and crowds, you'll be tired and need a break. Doune is perfect. enlivened by the fact Monty Python's Holy Grail Film was filmed there, years ago, so the staff are a bit more relaxed, and you get to climb freely all over the place, where in other castles it'd be roped off. Serious castle hunter or casual backpacker, this is a great stopping place - just north of Stirling. If you've done Edinburgh Castle, you may be doubting the need (and expense) of visiting Stirling Castle, and then the Wallace Monument (my relative!) - and I'd agree. Give yourself a break - you're on holiday! its great to view the castles and monument from the outside, for free, then head north for 20 minutes to Doune!! Let your hair down and enjoy yourself!!! Just north of Edinburgh is the ancient county of Perthshire, a huge county that includes rugged Highland and gentle Lowland scenery in abundance. The market town (or mini city) of Perth is just 40 minutes from Edinburgh, along the M90 motorway, and you'll really appreciate the freshness of the scenery, the clean air and open space. Perth is where scotland began, where Kings first came together and created a nation, with Scone Palace now occupying the site of Pictish & Scottish Chiefs' crowning. Well worth exploring. Perth is a beautiful, quiet, unassuming town, of 50,000 people. Now a thriving and popular place - it grew up as the best crossing point of the mighty River Tay, and a harbour for ships entering Scotland up the Tay. The Romans were preceded many centuries before by nomads in wood canoes, first settlers of this land after the ice age. Perthshire and Tayside are full of historic sites, stone circles, iron and bronze age remains, castles and is a centre for high quality malt whisky - with both the oldest and smallest distilleries in Scotland. Perth and the River Tay are best loved for the countryside, the richness and beauty of fields, lochs, woods and hills that is mind blowing. it hardly matters that the oldest living thing in all Europe is here (Fortingall Yew Tree) or Britain's tallest trees. Leave a Comment Address: Perth City, Tayside, ScotlandDirections: See my many pictures and extensive tips for Perth and Tayside. I promise, you'll love it.Website: www.perthshire.co.uk Other Contact: www.multimap.co.uk

Unbelievably, Glasgow is really close to Edinburgh - maybe this proximity and vying for seniority is why the two cities hardly speak a kind word of each other! And then there is football. So, you will hear little said of Glasgow's amazing architecture, museums, West End, its shops, galleries and parks, the River Clyde and its rich heritage - but it is well worth seeing - you Must See Glasgow when in Scotland, sometime, whether part of a day trip from Edinburgh, or on a proper visit. Glasgow deserves to be seen, and you deserve to explore Glasgow. It's also way closer than most other places in this category!!!! Leave a Comment Address: GlasgowDirections: West of Edinburgh, down the M8 motorway or by train. This is a major commuter route!Website: www.multimap.co.uk

The Crannog is an Iron age dwelling reconstructed by underwater archaeologists It is a 4 star attraction! Go inside and learn crafts like fire lighting and spinning! This place is unique - and gives you a great insight into the lives of Scotland's early settlers ... and gets you thinking! It is a wonderful counter-balance to all those castles and kings. Great scenery too! Follow this link for more about Crannog Leave a Comment

Achieving international fame by The Da Vinci Code and enjoying a constant stream of tourists since, the Rosslyn Chapel is a small chapel that packs a lot within its walls. Most notable is the intricate column carvings by the apprentice who was later struck dead by his master as the latter was furious that he had gone ahead with it before him-- never mind that the younger of the two did a much better job at it). The guided tour makes no mention of the sealed underground vault, but feel free to ask the friendly tour guides. The sudden influx of tourists has its pros and cons-- the positive side is that there is a lot of money for lengthy restoration. Unfortunately for us tourists, this also means that it is impossible to get a picture of the chapel without any scaffolding. Take some, leave some. Is it worth the bus ride all the way of out Edinburgh, you ask? 50/50. Come if you have time to spare. Leave a Comment Directions: Take a bus from the Monument. Bus ride might take about 45mins-1 hour.

After a couple of days in Edinburgh, you'll be ready to move on. Head north, over the wonderful Forth Road Bridge, with great views (especially of the rail bridge) and head for Culross. Details to follow. Leave a Comment

When visiting Scotland it is hard to miss out of one of the many old whiskey distilleries that are located - more or less - all over the land! I visited The Glenturret Distillery from 1775 which is a distillery with great traditions. After a tour around the distillery we were to taste the whiskey - I must admitt (no matter how interesting I had found the guidedtour) that I didnt like the whiskey - not even with a lot of water in it! - But even IF not liking whiskey it is still worth a visit...
