Like any capital city there are plenty of traps to allure the eager tourist.
Watch out for the overpriced shortbread biscuits, tartan everything (can you find YOUR clan?) and plenty of whiskey themed gifts. I managed to go home with all three!. Leave a Comment

You'll never forget you're in Scotland, with 1001 shops hoping to sell you a variety of trashy souveniers from bad tartans in brash colours to bagpipes and shortbread (well, at least you can eat the shortbread).

Try not to spend too much of your money on tartan tat from the gift shops on the Royal Mile. Instead get your gifts from the small art galleries dotted all over the city. You will go home with something much more genuinely Scottish. Leave a Comment

Princes Street. Although a wonderful shopping area, and you will not walk down there without seeing a Scotsman in full regalia playing bagpipes. Some of the shops charge ridiculous prices for goods. I would not advise you against going and window shopping but be aware you can get goods a lot cheaper elsewhere. Leave a Comment

Steer clear of the tacky tartan shops!! OK, I know people think all we Scots go around wearing the plaid... but we don't; we're pretty normal people, you know! And the stuff they tend to sell these days doesn't usually date back hundreds of years to the days of William Wallace... So save your money, or at least give it to a worthier cause such as one of the homeless Big Issue vendors you'll find on Princes Street instead! Leave a Comment
