 | Edinburgh Transportation | Tips 11 - 20 of 213 | | Popular Transportation | Other Transportation Tips | All Tips (213) Riding on the top deck of a double decker bus is a good way to see the city. On the other hand, Edinburgh is a very compact city, and most places are within walking distance, so you might want to just hoof it. Or borrow a bicycle and get around that way. If you do decide to take the bus, a single ticket costs £ 0.80 and a day pass is £ 2.30. Be sure you have the correct change, because you can't get change on the bus. I'm told this is so the driver does not have any access to cash, and is thus less likely to be robbed. Leave a Comment

The train leaving Waverley Station in the foreground belongs to a new company called First ScotRail, which got a franchise to operate numerous regional train services in Scotland beginning in October 2004. The second train, five tracks further back, is the Edinburgh-to-London service which is run by the Great Northern Eastern Railway (GNER). There are two such trains per hour, and the journey from Edinburgh to Kings Cross Station in London takes somewhat longer than four hours. Leave a Comment

The day I was going to North Queensferry I went to Waverley Station and bought a ticket. I got a cheap day return ticket without asking for it and I did not notice that right away as I had now idea of the prices. I was not going to go directly from North Queensferry back to Edinburgh. The price for the return ticket was 3.60 pounds and I guess that was a good price. There were just a few minutes before the train was going to leave, but if I had missed the 9.15 train there was one leaving only 5 minutes later. After that it was about 20 minutes to the next train. From Waverley Station it takes less then 20 minutes to go to Queensferry. Queensferry is the first station after you have crossed the famous Forth Rail Bridge. Going back over the bridge to Dalmeny I had to wait for the train almost 20 minutes (then two trains were coming with only 5 minutes in between). It only took a few minutes between the two stations and I used my return ticket to Edinburgh. Leave a Comment Theme: Train

The public transportation within the city borders is operated by buses of Lothian Buses. They have an exact fare system, which means that the drivers are unable to give change. So make sure to have the correct fare when boarding a bus. Leave a Comment

Buses are reliable and relatively inexpensive. If you plan to travel a lot around the city, buy a daily or a weekly ticket to save some money. Mind that the driver does not handle cash. When you enter the bus, you put your cash in a special box, and if you need change - you will not get it!!! So put the exact fare in the box to avoid extra costs. The cheapest ticket is 90 pence. A 15-minutes taxi drive can cost as much as 10 pounds. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

I bought my flight ticket via Internet a few months before I was leaving. I bought it from Snowflake, which is SAS (Scandinavian Airlines) low price company. The price one way was 595 kr. The good thing with snowflake is that they leave from Arlanda Airport, which is just in between Stockholm and Uppsala and the flight times are good (the departure time from Arlanda is 10.50 and departure from Edinburgh is 12.50). I know Ryanair is also flying Stockholm – Edinburgh, but they fly from Skavsta south of Stockholm. The flight takes 2 hours and 10 minutes. When I left Arlanda we left 45 minutes late, because there was a queue for de-icing. Leave a Comment

Well, OK, so one is not going to move very far on this vessel. But you never know perhaps Liz is reading this; I'm sure she can get it out for a quick spin, even if it is techincally owned bya non-profit making trust, who "only" charge 8.50 quid for a gander. The nice lady might've let me in for the student price of 4.50, but I didn't try. Anyway, I've seen inside fancy yachts while working on them and in that capacity saw her in HK harbour once, with Chuck W wandering the decks during a certain event in '97. Well, not during, 'coz it was chucking it down then and he was ashore, chatting with Chrispy I think. (Was "she" still about then? I can't remember. Not important anyway). Leave a Comment

Another company which provides rail service from Waverley Station is Virgin Trains. Their trains leave Edinburgh twice an hour for Birmingham. Like the London trains, the ones to Birmingham take somewhat longer than four hours to reach their destination. Click below for schedule information: Leave a Comment

The Forth Bridge has nothing to do with numbers but because it spans the Firth of Forth. The bridge is 2.5 km or 1.5 miles in length and was the Worlds first major steel Bridge. Construction began in 1883 and was finally opened on 4th. March 1890 when HRH Edward Prince of Wales tapped in the final nugget which was said to be made of gold. The Scotsman newspaper recently ran a vote on must see in Scotland & the Forth Bridge won the award - not surprising really as it is known as Scotland's biggest "listed" builidng. For the first hundred years the bridge was painted from end to end and took a year to complete hence the phrase in Scotland when something becomes tedious = "This is like painting the Forth Bridge" Today with state of the art paint, protecting the bridge, the paint lasts at least for 20 years. You can visit a small exhibition at the Queensferry Lodge Hotle to see how the bridge was constructed. Leave a Comment

If you are the only person getting off a bus, always press the button before your stop or the bus will go on without stopping. If you are not sure where to get off, ask the driver to tell you. This is preferable to having to walk back a long way as I had to do a few times because I had missed my stop or noticed it too late. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus
