Airport Bus

The 100 bus runs from Waverly Bridge right to the airport entrance doors via the A8 picking up at various places along the way. A single journey costs £3 with an open return costing £5. Tickets can be bought at the booths or on the bus. The drivers always seem helpful and when asked will call out your stop on the PA system (some even give a running commentary).

Make sure you are at the correct bus stop (should have 100 in Blue lettering) as it can be a bit infuriating when a bus flies past your outstretched hand. It doesn't help that these stops seem to relocate every few months (has caught me out and I fly several times a month).

The Lothian Buses 35 service also runs from Edinburgh Airport every 15 minutes. This isn't the most direct route but goes past some of the cities best landmarks and is only £1 compared to the Airbus at £3.

If you are heading North across the Forth towards Dundee and Aberdeen then there is a Air Direct 747 bus link to Inverkeithing railway station.

Lothian Buses have also just introduced the Edinburgh Shuttle. This 7 seater minibus could be handy for single travellers as it offers a door to door service for £8, if you are staying in the central zone. I'm not sold on this as a taxi service offers a similar prices if two or more people are sharing.

We have Red double decker buses (not the London ones!!) here in Edinburgh... you can hop on and off as you choose, the daily rate is £2.50 or you can get a weekly ridacard for £7.00. It's a great way to see the city, the buses are clearly marked at the front as to where they are going....

My favourite thing is to just hop on a bus *I have a monthly pass* and see where it takes me. It was a good way to learn where things were in Edinburgh when I first arrived here. As with all public transport keep an eye on your bag and wallet and have a rough idea which direction you are going in. This (for me) is impossible as unless the sun shines, I really have no clue.

Interestingly they now have *greenways* all over the major routes into the city which are blocked to other traffic except taxis from 7.30-9.00am and 4.30-6.30pm to allow buses easier and faster access. It is slightly inconvenient that delivery vehicles and inconsiderate drivers park in these lanes and cause a few problems....

They are threatening to start using the towaway lorries to remove these cars.....

    Arriving by rail
  • Tip Rating:
  • To get to Edinburgh from the north of Scotland, there are regular trains from Inverness- some direct, others needing a change at Stirling- or from Aberdeen.
If coming from London, trains leave from Kings Cross and take from 5-6 hours. It is best to book a seat 24 hours in advance as the trains can be crowded. Booking is free.

All trains from the north cross the old railway bridge, and this gives a good view of the new road bridge and vice versa if arriving by road, whether by car or bus.

    Trains in time
  • Tip Rating:
  • I go by train, but take my bike (cycle) on it. If I book ahead I'd save a packet, but I'm a slack bugger and never plan more than a day ahead for anything, so I always pay £26 on a GNER train from Aberdeen to Edinburgh Waverley Station, which is right in the centre. There is also Haymarket Station just to the West ofthe castle a little bit out of town.

But forgive me, I'm only English, I don't know this language well, but if you travel in advance of a date, does that not mean earlier? I'm thinking that Scotrail are branching out to the timetravel market now.

A Toll Bridge for a reason but now no toll

The Forth Road Bridge cost £19,500,000 to construct and carries a toll of £1.00 but you only have to pay at the Edinburgh side. The bridge was opened in 1964 by HRH Queen Elizabeth !! & at that time was the largest suspension bridge in Europe. The central span of the bridge measures 3,300 feet and is quite spectacular, dual road ways on both sides are accompanied by cylce paths & footpaths (no toll) I remember as a small girl walking accross this bridge with my Brownie Pack when it first opened. The bridge can be seen in the distance from Edinburgh Castle, but if you want a closer look go to the view point at South Queensferry. As from midnight 10th. February the toll has been removed and you no longer have to pay. The toll on the Tay Bridge at Dundee has also been removed = now Scotland's roads are all toll free and will be subsidised by the Scottish Parliament. Good news indeed for all bridge users.

    Airlink bus to/from the airport
  • Tip Rating:
  • The airlink bus was very easy to find at the Edinburgh airport, just outside the arrivals hall look for the blue buses heading for Edinburgh's city center. The cost is L3 or L5 open return and takes about 25 minutes to get to the city center. The bus stops at 8 places including the airport and Waverly train station, the bus connections taking you further are marked on the attached website. Buses run 24 hours a day, every 10 minutes during peak hours, less frequently in the early morning hours and on Sunday.

I was staying in the New Town so I got off at the West End (Shandwick Place) stop and walked the 10 minutes to the Castle View Guest House. To get back to the airport, I picked the bus up across the street from where I was dropped off.

Not sure if they took credit cards, there was an ATM and a currency exchange in the arrivals hall, look for the Travelex sign. You can book online as well.

Main station into Edinburgh. Sited right in the heart of the city, Princes Street, clean, big, just walk out and discover the city. You should be able to get trains from here to anywhere in Scottie.... has an excess baggage depot 0131 558 3829. Information Centres inside the station, best to get a return ticket from wherever you want to go. Some rural stations are hardly occupied by staff...

One point, YOU MUST book in advance if you intend to travel by rail. Not because you can't find a seat, but because it is CHEAPER. No one, not even God, can fathom out the British Railway pricing system. Even the staff are confused. You can take your bicycle in the Guard's van. You can't take pets. You must only use mobile phones in the bit between carriages.

One day, British Rail will decide to get this system operating so that we don't NEED cars, railways are fast efficient and CHEAP.... sigh

    By Train
  • Tip Rating:
  • I have travelled in and out of Edinburgh on train a couple of times (travelling both up north to Inverness, west to Glasgow and south to York and then onto London). Trains in the UK are very comfortable and are kept in very good condition. Most of them will either have a food trolley or an area of the train to get food from. Just beware that some compartments are smoking, but the majority are non-smoking.

On my previous trip to the UK I had a rail-pass, this time I did not. My trip from Edinburgh to London (on a Saturday) cost me GBP 99.50 (which is AUD 238!!). I think if you are spending some time in the UK a rail-pass is the way to go, or at least make sure you have some kind of concession card that you can use.

Still, despite the price, I enjoyed travelling by train, along the railways of the UK you pass many scenic places, so just relax and let the country pass you by.

    Use your feet
  • Tip Rating:
  • I kept reading about a hop on hop off bus but I couldn't really see any need to use buses in Edinburgh for the main tourist sights. Most of what the average tourist will visit is along the Royal Mile which if I had to hazard a guess, is about a mile long ;-)

One thing I will mention, if you are a flatlander like me and unaccustomed to inclines of any sort, your shins and/or calves are likely to hurt by the end of your visit, if you aren't walking up a hill, then you are walking down a hill, there is no flat ground with the exception of Princes Street.
